Student answer (Band 5.5)

The information about age, total loans by category and total number of loans has been presented in the form of charts and a table. Members of Little Chalfornt Library has been divided in four age groups. In 2016, there were 102 members associated with the library. Members were composed of 22 childrens, 15 young adults with age in between 13 and 17, 51 adults with age ranging from 18 to 64 and 12 adults with age above 65. The share of adult non-fiction and children's non-fiction was 13% and 6% respectively. Other categories were making 5% of total loans. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the charts and table, such as member numbers, loan categories, and the overall trend from 2007 to 2016. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies. For instance, the spelling of the town's name is incorrect as 'Chalfornt', and the statement that 'each year the number of loans were ranging from 15000 to 23000' is slightly imprecise given the data starts around 15,700 and peaks near 21,700. The overview is partially present, but the details lack full extension. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure greater accuracy in data reporting and provide a clearer, more prominent overview of the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement, but the cohesion is sometimes mechanical and the paragraphing is underdeveloped, as the entire text is placed into a single block of writing. While basic referencing is attempted, the lack of paragraph breaks makes the progression less fluid than required for higher bands. To improve, the writer should logically divide the response into distinct paragraphs—such as an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs for the different charts—and employ a wider variety of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey information about percentages, age brackets, and categories successfully. Less common vocabulary is attempted, such as 'contributing equally' and 'progressively', though there are occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'childrens' instead of 'children' and the misspelling of 'Chalfont'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile of this level. To achieve a higher score, the writer should aim for greater precision in word formation and incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Members were composed of 22 childrens...' and 'There were seven different categories...'. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Members of Little Chalfornt Library has been divided') and incorrect prepositions or awkward phrasing ('with age in between 13 and 17'). However, these errors rarely impede communication. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over grammatical structures and articles.
