Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and comprehensive overview of the mixed charts regarding Little Chalfont Library. Key features are accurately highlighted, such as the dominance of adults aged 18-64 making up 51% of members and the equal popularity of children's and adult fiction at 38% each. Data points are well-selected and reported accurately, including the upward trend in total loans from 2007 to 2016 alongside the dips in 2009 and 2013. The comparisons are relevant and well integrated. To reach the highest tier, the analysis could incorporate even finer details or synthesise the data points with absolute precision, but overall the task is handled thoroughly with only minor omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped effectively, with the first body paragraph focusing on membership demographics, the second on loan categories in 2016, and the final paragraph detailing the timeline of total loans. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, as seen with transition phrases like 'In contrast', 'In the same year', and 'This number then broadly showed an increase'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and contributes to the overall clarity of the response, though occasional minor slip-ups in referencing keep this criterion just below the highest bands. The structure guides the reader smoothly from the introduction to the final trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items such as 'proportion', 'contributed', and 'trended upward'. There is a good awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. However, there are occasional lexical inaccuracies and word-form errors, such as writing 'library menber' instead of 'member', 'adults non-fiction' instead of 'adult non-fiction', and a minor phrasing slip with 'around half (51%) members of library'. These minor slips prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands, but communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains adequate for a clear, informative report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good attempts at structures like 'While...', relative clauses, and comparative patterns. There are frequent error-free sentences, but a number of grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles and prepositions, such as 'the data of public library' (missing articles) and 'loans of adults non-fiction' (unnecessary prepositional marking). Punctuation and verb tense controls are generally solid, though some minor slip-ups occur. These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammatical control squarely at a level where complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of accuracy.
