Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of the age of the library member, while table and bar chart gives the information about the loans category taken in 2016 and total number of loans taken from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, pie chart showed that, in 2016, adults are the significant library users while other members are less involved. In table, highest loans were taken on children's fiction and adult fiction conversely least taken on children's DVDs, young adults and audio books. In bar chart, maximum loans were taken in 2011 and 2016 and the number is least in 2007.

Pie chart showed that 51% users were adults aged 18-64, 22% were children, 15% were young adults aged 13-17 and only 12% were adults above age 65. In table, 38% loan was taken on children's fiction and adult fiction, 13% on adult non fiction, 6% on children's non fiction while only 2% on both young adults and adult audio books and 1% on children's DVDs in 2016.

In bar chart, a greatest number of loans about 20000 were taken in year 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. About 18000 loan was taken in 2008, 2009and 2013 and only 15000 was taken in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by addressing the pie chart, table, and bar chart, presenting an overarching summary as well as key details. The student highlights the most prominent features, such as adults comprising the largest age group of library members, fiction books leading in total loans, and loan numbers peaking in 2011 and 2016. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed or lack precise comparison, and there are minor inaccuracies in reading specific figures from the bar chart (for example, grouping 2010 and 2012 at around 20,000 when they fluctuate slightly). To reach a higher level, the response would benefit from fully extending the comparisons between the different data sets rather than listing features sequentially paragraph by paragraph, showing a more cohesive overview of how age groups correlate with borrowing categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific charts. Progression is generally maintained, moving logically from general proportions to category breakdowns and temporal trends. However, cohesion relies heavily on mechanical repetition and simple listing devices such as 'In table,' 'In bar chart,' and 'Pie chart showed that,' which makes the flow somewhat formulaic. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct ideas, but referencing and logical transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a disjointed feel. Developing more varied cohesive ties and avoiding repetitive sentence openings will greatly enhance the overall flow and organization of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic statistical information regarding proportions, categories, and yearly trends. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'proportion,' 'significant,' 'conversely,' and 'fluctuate' (though the latter is missed, simple terms like 'taken' are overused). There are some noticeable lexical and collocational infelicities, such as stating that 'loans were taken on' rather than 'borrowed' or 'issued,' and minor word-formation or phrasing slips like 'adult non fiction' missing a hyphen. Spelling is generally accurate throughout. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of precise, task-specific vocabulary and collocation, reducing the reliance on basic verbs and repetitious nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing basic past and present tense structures to report the data. While some sentences are accurate, there are frequent minor errors in grammar, particularly regarding articles (e.g., 'the pie chart,' 'in table,' 'in bar chart') and prepositions (e.g., 'loans were taken on children's fiction'). Subject-verb agreement and singular/plural consistency also occasionally falter, such as 'table and bar chart gives.' These errors reflect a control level where grammar mistakes persist and complex structures are attempted with mixed success, although they rarely impede overall communication. Greater control over article usage, plurals, and prepositional phrasing is necessary to secure higher grammatical accuracy.
