Student answer (Band 5.5)

The charts illustrates all the data related to a public library in a town named Little Chalfont.

Overall, it shows three classifications like age of library members (2016), total loans by category (2016) and total number of loans between 2007 and 2016. As we can clearly see in the pie chart, the adults aged between 18 to 64 contributed more than half percent in terms of being members. Moreover, adult fiction and children's fiction aquired equal numbers in total loans by category.

In 2016, the library membership is divided in four types which are children, young adults of 13 to 17 years old, adults between 18 to 64 and adults aged 65 or more. Elderly people gained 51 percent, the maximum membership in terms of numbers. The other three respectively aquired 49 percent. Elderly individuals aquired 12 percent, young adults 15 and children also show some interest with 22 percent.

There are seven categories of total loans in 2016. Children's DVDs was the lowest factor with only 1 percent total loans. Young adults and adult audio books were only 2 percent contributors, while the highest contributors were children's fiction adult fiction, who aquired 38 percent total loans. It can be seen between the the period of 2007 and 2016 that loans number is only 16000, which is improved as we kept going onwards peaking at nearly 23000 at the end of 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of the charts while containing noticeable inaccuracies and contradictions. For instance, the writer states that adults aged 18 to 64 contributed more than half percent, but then later confuses percentages and categories by claiming that elderly people gained 51 percent membership when the data clearly shows this figure belongs to the 18 to 64 age group. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat limited and the details are under-developed. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to accurately report the figures without internal contradictions and ensure all key data points, such as the overall trends across the ten-year period, are described with precision and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates some organisation with an attempted introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall summary, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, such as transitioning abruptly into specific details without establishing clear links. Additionally, referencing is occasionally confusing, as seen in the phrase 'the other three respectively aquired 49 percent', which lacks clear mapping to the specific groups mentioned previously. Paragraphing is present, but internal logical transitions need improvement. To achieve a higher band, the writer should ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next and that cohesive devices are used more naturally and accurately to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'classifications' and 'contributors', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'aquired' and 'factors'. Additionally, there are awkward collocations and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'lowest factor' instead of 'lowest category'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader in interpreting the precise meaning. To improve this criterion, the writer should focus on expanding the range of functional vocabulary for describing statistical data, improving precision in word choice, and paying closer attention to standard spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few clumsy attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'The charts illustrates' and tense inconsistencies or awkward phrasing such as 'loans number is only 16000, which is improved as we kept going onwards'. Punctuation and preposition use also show recurring flaws. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and require the reader to re-read parts of the text. To reach the next level, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with better control and significantly reduce basic grammatical errors.
