Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by presenting an overview of the charts, detailing the age distribution of members, loan categories, and the overall loan trends from 2007 to 2016. The writer selects key features, such as the peak in 2016 and the dominance of adult and children's fiction at 38%. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the writer states that children are 'about 22' in 2016, which confuses the absolute number (22 members) with a percentage, and misreads the 2016 loan figure slightly as 22,000 instead of approximately 21,700. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the response fully meets the requirements of the lower band and demonstrates enough competent reporting to edge into the next level, though greater precision with data categories is needed for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs addressing each chart in turn. Logical progression is established through sequencing words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'Compared to this, the lowest number of total loans was in 2007'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'combines only to 27 memebers total'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual elements, meeting the standards of the lower band while showing partial control of cohesive devices characteristic of the next band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'proportions', 'fluctuated', and 'stabilized'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'most total loans of categories' and 'whom ages are between'. Word choice errors also appear in data reporting, such as confusing member headcounts with percentages or absolute values. Spelling and word-form slips, such as 'piechart' (written as one word) and 'memebers', occur. These errors do not seriously impede communication, placing the response firmly at this band, but a more flexible and precise control of less common vocabulary is required to progress.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses ('whom ages are between') and passive or comparative structures. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the total figures of loans has experienced', 'young adults and people over 65 age combines'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases ('at 22,000' instead of 'reaching 22,000'). Capitalisation errors ('little chalfont') are also present. These errors rarely impede communication, satisfying the criteria for this band, but frequent slips prevent the formation of a majority of error-free complex sentences.
