Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data presented in the task, providing an overview and reporting on key features such as library memberships, loan categories, and the 10-year loan trend. The candidate attempts to make relevant comparisons, noting that adults aged 18-64 held the largest share of memberships and that adult and children's fiction dominated the loans. However, some parts are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, stating that 'people over 18 share 51% of the library memberships' when the data specifically denotes adults aged 18-64. The overview is present but could be more fully integrated. To reach a higher band, the response needs to extend and support all main trends with absolute precision and fully developed comparisons throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure by dividing the information into distinct paragraphs covering memberships, loan categories, and the bar graph trends. Information flows reasonably well, though cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as the transition 'In contrary' instead of 'In contrast'. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing could be utilized more effectively to separate the distinct graphical elements of the prompt. To move to the next band, the candidate must demonstrate more flexible and sophisticated use of cohesive devices, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences and paragraphs without repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main points of the charts. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'fluctuated', 'collectively', and 'proportion', but there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'the year to took largest amount of loans' and 'contains only 15%'. Spelling and word-form errors, including 'secound' and 'remaing', occasionally appear but do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the response needs a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical items and idiomatic collocations used with greater accuracy and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and time phrases. However, there are persistent grammatical and punctuation errors that hold the score at this level, such as tense and verb form issues ('year to took', 'while it 2016 took'), article misuse ('the significant number', 'the largest amount of the loan'), and prepositions. While these errors rarely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the attainment of a higher band. To improve, the candidate needs to exercise better control over complex sentence structures, ensuring accurate verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and article usage.
