Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts below provide data about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Overall, large number of library members fall under proportion of adults, even more than half of total number, which is then followed in ascending order as children, young adults, and adults 65 & over. On the other hand, the total number of loans are increasing throughout the period with slight fluctuations.
For year 2016, adults ageing between 18-64 are 51 of the total library members, followed by children, young adults, adults 65 & over which are 22, 15, and 12 of the total members. Loan category for same year has highest percentage for the children and the adult fiction, which is 38% each. While the children's DVDs category pose a lowest number which is just 1% of the toal loans, followed by second lowest categories young adults and adult audio books, which are 2% each. Adult non fiction has 13% of total loans for year 2016, followed by category "children's non fiction", which is 6%.
From year 2007 to 2016, there's a drastic increment in total number of loans with starting at just over 15,000 in 2007 to over 20,000 in 2016. Initially it increases until year 2011 to over 20,000 total number of loans, and then reduces until 2013 to just lower 20,000. Then again resurges back to over 20,000 in year 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three visual elements provided in the prompt, addressing the age of library members, the loan categories, and the overall loan trend from 2007 to 2016. An overview is present, highlighting the dominance of adult members and the upward trend in loans. The response sits at this level because while main features and comparisons are reported, some details are slightly over-generalized or underdeveloped, such as the treatment of individual loan categories where figures are listed mechanically rather than fully integrated into a cohesive comparative narrative. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed and key data points like the 38% peaks for children and adult fiction are correctly cited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to specific breakdowns of membership, loan categories, and temporal trends. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand,' 'For year 2016,' and 'From year 2007 to 2016' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, cohesion occasionally feels mechanical or slightly repetitive, and referencing within sentences (such as linking categories to percentages without smooth transitions) lacks the seamless progression characteristic of higher bands. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response, ensuring a clear conceptual path throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items and specific terminology related to data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'ascending order', 'drastic increment', and 'resurges'. While the range is sufficient to convey the main features, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing—for instance, writing 'large number of library members fall under proportion of adults' instead of 'fall into the adult proportion', and 'pose a lowest number' instead of 'account for the lowest proportion'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'adults ageing between' and 'to just lower 20,000'. These errors do not impede communication but prevent the writer from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and prepositional phrases. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with several noticeable errors present throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('For year 2016', 'Adult non fiction'), awkward prepositions ('ageing between 18-64 are 51 of the total'), and minor subject-verb agreement or phrasing slips like 'the total number of loans are increasing' instead of 'is increasing'. Although these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures remain generally clear enough for the reader to follow the intended meaning.
