Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting key features from the three charts provided. In the overview, the candidate attempts to outline the main trends, noting that the highest percentage of library members were adults and that total loans increased over time. However, the overview is somewhat convoluted and contains mechanical phrasing. Key details such as the percentages for age groups in 2016 and loan categories are covered, but some areas lack sufficient extension or precision, fulfilling the requirements for the middle band while showing some elements of the next. For instance, the transition between discussing member demographics and loan categories is slightly abrupt, and certain figures are reported with minor imprecision. To reach a higher standard, the overview should synthesise the main global trends more clearly and concisely without bundling unrelated details into a single, overly dense sentence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs addressing specific charts, and a concluding trend description. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Overall', 'At first', 'However', and 'Regarding the total number of loans'. However, some of these devices are mechanical or awkwardly placed, such as starting a sentence with 'Regarding the total number of loans went up gradually'. Referencing and logical flow occasionally falter, leading to clunky transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information, but within paragraphs, the links between ideas could be smoother. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that every transitional phrase integrates naturally into the sentence structure without disrupting the flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate information about percentages, categories, and trends. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'prominent', 'gradually increased', and 'subsequently', demonstrating an awareness of academic style. However, there are notable instances of word choice, spelling, and word-form errors that prevent a higher rating. For example, 'memborship' is misspelled, 'borrowed categories' should be phrased as categories of books borrowed, and expressions like 'young age' are imprecise when referring to young adult age groups. Furthermore, collocation in phrases like 'categories borrowed by people at 38%' is unnatural. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision. To improve, the student should expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing data and pay closer attention to standard spelling and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. However, control over grammar is inconsistent, and frequent errors persist throughout the text. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness, such as 'Regarding the total number of loans went up gradually', where the subject lacks a proper verb or is awkwardly structured. Other errors include missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms, such as 'despite of in 2013' and 'when it slighlty declined'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips in complex structures mean that error-free sentences are not frequent enough for a higher tier. To progress, the candidate must focus on constructing grammatically sound complex sentences, ensuring that clauses are properly linked and that prepositions and verb tenses are used accurately.
