Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially, failing to adequately cover the multiple charts provided. While the writer attempts to mention some figures, such as the 51% adult membership and the 22% for children, the data is frequently misinterpreted or confused with loan categories. For instance, the text claims that a loan taken by the library was around 22000$ and attributes this to audio books or fiction percentages rather than reporting the trend over time correctly. Furthermore, the overview is extremely limited, and key features of the line graph showing loans from 2007 to 2016 are largely missed or misunderstood. To improve, the writer must ensure that all parts of the visual data are properly identified, accurate figures are reported without confusing percentages with monetary values or loan totals, and a clear, accurate summary of the main trends is provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression and logical sequencing. The writer attempts to use transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly', but these cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate given the confusing flow of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is muddled, mixing bar graph data, pie chart proportions, and loan categories haphazardly within single paragraphs. Referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult to follow which data set is being discussed. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to group related information logically, ensure that each paragraph has a distinct and clear focus, and use cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are several instances of incorrect word choices, inappropriate phrasing, and word form errors, such as writing 'catagories' instead of categories, 'memers' instead of members, 'interset' instead of interest, and 'childern' instead of children. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and attempts at less common lexical items are unsuccessful due to collocation and spelling inaccuracies. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their vocabulary range, learning correct spellings of common academic terms, and practising precise word choices to report statistical data accurately without distracting the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'The charts gives the information', 'largest loan taken by Little Chalfont library in 2016 which was around 22000$', and '2% people wants adult audio books'. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, and issues with prepositions and plural forms further reduce clarity. To achieve a higher band, the writer must work on building accurate complex sentence patterns, ensuring correct verb tenses and agreement, and proofreading carefully to eliminate basic grammatical slips.
