IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The charts displays information about the Little Chalfont Library. The pie chart illustrates the age wise categorisation of members and the table describes the loans taken on the basis of genre of media in 2016, whereas the bar graph shows the total number of loans taken between 2007 and 2016.
In the library, the membership is majorly occupied by adults, aged 18-64, at 51%, followed by children, holding 22%. Therefore, 38% of the total loans are primarily taken for adult and children's fiction books. Further, the number of members aged 13-17, that is young adults, and adults, aged 65 and above, are comparatively lesser, at 15% and 12%, respectively, explaining the loans to be as low as 2% for young adults books.
A key trend is witnessed in terms of children's DVDs and adult audio books, wherein the loans on products for both, children and adult, is as low as 1% and 2%. In addition, only 6% of the total loans taken include children's non-fiction, while loan for adult non-fiction is 13%. In a period of nearly one decade, a huge number of loans were taken in the year 2011 and 2016, approximately 22,000. On the other hand, only 15,000 in 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by introducing the charts and touching upon membership ages, loan genres, and the overall loan trend over time. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or contain inaccuracies. For instance, the statement '38% of the total loans are primarily taken for adult and children's fiction books' misinterprets the data, as 38% represents each category individually rather than combined. Furthermore, the final paragraph misreads the timeline by stating there was a loan count of 15,000 in 2017, whereas the chart covers up to 2016. These lapses prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response possesses a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from introducing the visual data to detailing member demographics and loan categories. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct features of the charts. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'whereas', 'further', and 'in addition', though referencing is occasionally mechanical or causes minor confusion, such as connecting membership percentages directly to loan proportions without smooth transitional logic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully incorporating specific terms such as 'categorisation', 'genre', 'demographics implied through members', and 'proportion'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, alongside minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'loan for adult non-fiction' instead of 'loans for adult non-fiction', and a slight misuse of collocation like 'the membership is majorly occupied by adults'. However, these lexical slips do not impede communication, allowing the response to secure a solid performance in this domain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'aged 18-64, at 51%, followed by children, holding 22%'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts displays') and awkward prepositional usage inside grammatical patterns. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a standard of control consistent with this level.
