Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first graph provides information about age and total loans by categories of the members of a public library in a town called Little Chalfont in the year 2016. The second graph illustrates data about total number of loans take by the members from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, library contains more adult than children by age, and children's and adult fictions are two popular categories in which mostly members took loans in the year 2026. The total number of loans increased substantially over the period with mild fluctutations in the middle of the duration.

Adults by age group (18 - 64) constitute the majority of the library membership followed by Children which is 51% and 22% respectively. Children and adult fiction books were the most common categories where people took loans which was 38%, while Children's DVDs and Adult audio books and Young adults categories were the least in which members took loans and that were 1% and 2% respectively.

Total number of loans rose gradully over the period from more than 15000 in the year 2007 to almost 22,000 in 2016 but there were mild fluctuations in the middle of the given period between 2012 and 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the charts, detailing age groups, loan categories, and the trend over time. However, some aspects are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies. For instance, the percentages for adult age groups and children are slightly confused in the text (stating 'Adults by age group... constitute the majority... followed by Children which is 51% and 22% respectively', whereas the chart shows adults 18-64 at 51% and children at 22%, but the phrasing makes the attribution slightly unclear). Additionally, there is a minor chronological typo in the overview where the student writes 'the year 2026' instead of 2016. The main features are selected and reported, but the development of comparisons could be extended to fully satisfy higher band descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs addressing the demographic/category breakdown and the timeline trend respectively. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Adults by age group', and 'Total number of loans', which help guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive in structure. For example, starting multiple sentences directly with subject nouns without varied transitional phrasing limits the fluidity of progression, placing the cohesion firmly within the mid-band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate information about percentages, age groups, and upward trends. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'constitute the majority', 'substantially', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some word choice errors and typos, such as 'total number of loans take' instead of 'taken', 'gradully' instead of 'gradually', and the mistranscription of the year as '2026' instead of '2016'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and coordinating conjunctions appropriately (e.g., 'The first graph provides information about... which illustrates data about...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('library contains more adult than children', 'adult fiction books were the most common categories') and occasional prepositional or agreement lapses. Despite these errors, the grammatical structures used are generally clear, and they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without difficulty.
