Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response falls significantly short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 47 words. Consequently, it only attempts part of the task by mentioning the pie chart and providing two brief overview points while completely ignoring the line graph and table data. There is no attempt to report the main features or make the necessary comparisons required for Academic Task 1. To meet higher standards, the response must be extended to cover all visual data provided in the prompt, including the trends over time and the loan categories, rather than stopping after just two sentences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

Despite its extreme brevity, the text demonstrates a basic attempt at structural organisation. It opens with an introductory sentence attempting to state the purpose of the visual data and follows with an 'Overall' transition to present general findings. However, because the text is merely two sentences long, true paragraphing and logical progression cannot be properly established. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying only on basic transitional framing. To improve cohesion, the writer needs to write a full-length essay where multiple paragraphs are linked logically, using a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices to guide the reader through detailed trends and data comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used in the response is basic and somewhat repetitive, featuring straightforward terms such as 'illustrates', 'information', 'age', 'members', and 'proportion'. There are also spelling and capitalization errors, notably 'munber' instead of 'number' and the lack of proper capitalization in 'Little chalfont library'. The writer attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'proportion' and 'highest proportion', which shows an awareness of the task requirements. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary range needs to be expanded significantly, incorporating less common lexical items, precise synonyms for describing data, and accurate spelling and capitalization throughout a fully developed essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response consists of two simple to moderately complex sentences, showing a basic grasp of sentence structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'the adults aged 18-64 has' and 'the adults 65 and over has', where the plural subjects require 'have'. Additionally, articles are misused or omitted in phrases like 'has lowest proportion', which should be 'has the lowest proportion'. While these errors do not completely block communication, they are frequent relative to the short length of the text. Achieving a higher band requires a wider variety of error-free complex structures and meticulous attention to articles and subject-verb agreement.
