Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the charts and reporting the main features, such as the membership age distribution, loan categories, and the overall loan trend between 2007 and 2016. The student provides a clear position throughout, selecting key data points accurately, including the peak years of 2011 and 2016 and the dominant categories of fiction loans at 38%. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly misread proportions in the initial paragraph where adult member percentages are conflated with total member counts, which prevents the response from reaching the highest tier. Overall, the information is well-supported with relevant figures from the visual data, fulfilling the requirements of this band securely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introduction and general overview to specific details regarding membership, categories, and yearly loan trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different chart features. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'Further examination reveals,' and 'If we talk about total number of loans.' However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or conversational, as seen in the phrasing 'If we talk about,' and referencing between sentences could be smoother. This places the essay solidly in the middle band for cohesion, showing good overall organisation while stopping short of the more flexible and sophisticated linking required for higher levels.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and specific domain vocabulary such as 'fluctuated', 'proportion', and various book categories. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors that prevent a higher score, including 'Mojority' instead of 'majority', 'borrowd' instead of 'borrowed', 'throught' instead of 'through', and 'one's' instead of 'ones'. Additionally, phrasing such as 'least members where adults' contains grammatical interference that affects lexical accuracy. While communication is not impeded, these frequent slips in spelling and precision restrict the score to this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and coordinate structures. There is adequate control over basic time markers and numerical reporting, and punctuation is generally functional. Nevertheless, a number of grammatical and structural errors persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the least members where adults'), awkward relative clauses ('adults ranging from 18 to 64 which were 51%'), and prepositional errors ('throught certain period'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to characterize the grammatical control at this level, where errors are noticeable despite attempts at complex structures.
