Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie chart illustrates the information about the age of libary members, whereas the table presents information on total loans by category in 2016. Meanwhile, the bar graph compares the total number of loans during 2007 to 2016 about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Overall, it is evident that adults showed a major portion of total in 2016, whereas adults over 65 and over recorded lowest proportion. Children's and adult's fiction category demonstrated highest loans. Additionally, the total number of loans fluctuated over the years.

Turning to the pie chart, in 2016, adults between the age of 18 to 64 accounted for 51% of the total, followed by children at 22%. Furthermore, young adults between the age of 13 to 17 constituted at 15%, compared to 12% for adults who are 65 and over.

With regard to the table, in 2016, children's and adult's fiction category accounted for similar figures at 38%. The non-fiction for both children and adult stood at 6% and 13%, respectively. Additionally, young adults recorded 2%, compared to 1% for children's DVDs.

As for the bar graph, at the outset, the number of loans stood at roughly 16,000. In 2008, it increased slightly to approximately 18,000 and remained plateaued for next year. In 2010, it rose steadily reaching around 21,000, whereas it continued to rise further by 1,000 more. However, it starts falling gradually reaching from 22,000 to 19,000 in between 2011 to 2013. Finally, the figures peaked at around 22,000, by the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the three visual formats provided. It appropriately selects and reports key features, such as the dominant age group in the pie chart and the leading categories in the table, alongside the overall fluctuation in the bar graph. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of the bar graph contains some inaccuracies regarding specific trends and years, which prevents it from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the main data trends are highlighted clearly and supported with accurate numerical references where appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory paragraph to an overview, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to each visual chart in turn. Paragraphing is used appropriately to divide information cleanly. Cohesive devices such as 'Turning to the pie chart', 'With regard to the table', and 'As for the bar graph' are used to guide the reader through the data, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel a little mechanical. Overall, the information flows logically and is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'accounted for', 'stood at roughly', and 'remained plateaued'. There are some minor word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as the typo 'libary' in the opening sentence and slightly awkward phrasing like 'adults showed a major portion of total' instead of 'proportion'. However, these lexical slips do not impede communication, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the statistical information effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'constituted at 15%' (where 'constituted' does not require 'at'), awkward prepositional use in 'in between 2011 to 2013', and a tense inconsistency where 'starts falling' shifts to the present tense within past-tense narrative context. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the majority of complex structures to remain clear and understandable.
