Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
First, the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 110 words, with 11 words directly copied from the prompt. Regarding content, the response only partially addresses the prompt. While it attempts to describe parts of the visual data—such as mentioning adult members at 51 percent and children at 22 percent—it confuses the multiple charts provided, blending the membership breakdown, loan categories, and overall loan trends into a vague and disjointed description. There is no clear overview of the main trends or features, and key data points from the time-series graph regarding the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016 are entirely omitted. To move up, you must meet the word count requirement and present a fully developed summary covering all charts accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organization, but overall progression is lacking. The text is divided into short paragraphs, but ideas within them jump abruptly between different datasets, such as shifting from member ages to loan categories without clear transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, with phrases like 'The number of adult lie' and 'where the children come secondly' showing mechanical and faulty connections. Pronoun referencing and linking between sentences are weak, causing the information to feel disjointed. To improve, you should group related data logically, use paragraphing effectively to separate different charts, and employ a wider range of accurate cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors that impact the quality of the writing. While basic terms like 'percent' and 'top category' are understood, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and form errors throughout the text, such as 'number of members age', 'adult lie', 'children fiction', and 'children's dvd's'. Spelling and capitalisation issues also occur, such as failing to capitalise 'little chalfont'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about the charts, but it lacks the precision and flexibility needed for higher bands. To improve, focus on using accurate word forms, correct collocations for describing statistical data, and a wider variety of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent structural and grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, verb forms, and prepositions, exemplified in errors such as 'The pie graph provide us' and 'loans were taken in 2016 where the children fiction and adult fiction categories lie'. Articles and plurals are also handled inconsistently throughout the text. While these errors rarely completely impede basic communication, they occur frequently and distract the reader. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and minimize basic grammatical mistakes.
