Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to reach the required word count, falling short of the 150-word minimum at 139 words. Furthermore, the student misinterprets the data significantly in the description of the pie chart and demographic figures, confusing the category percentages and age groups (for instance, stating that children accounted for 51 percentage, whereas the chart shows that adults aged 18-64 make up 51 percent while children make up 22 percent). The overview is very basic, and the data reporting lacks accuracy and development. To improve, you must ensure that your total word count meets the minimum requirement, read the charts and axes carefully to report the exact data, and provide a clear, accurate overview of the main trends without confusing the figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation with basic paragraphing, but the response lacks clear overall progression. Paragraph breaks are used to separate different charts, but the transitions between ideas are mechanical and weak, often relying on repetitive connectors such as 'Furthermore' and 'In pie chart'. Referencing is also sometimes unclear, which hampers the logical flow of information. To move to a higher band, you need to ensure a smoother, more logical progression of ideas throughout the text. Use a wider variety of cohesive devices naturally, and make sure that referencing words clearly point to the intended subjects to guide the reader effortlessly through your report.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, showing a limited range appropriate for this level. There are noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'childrens' instead of 'children', and awkward phrasing like 'adults which have age between'. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the precision of your report. To achieve a higher score, you should build a broader vocabulary specifically suited for describing data, trends, and proportions. Practise using less common lexical items accurately, pay close attention to word forms and plurals, and ensure your collocations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors. When complex structures are attempted, they often contain grammatical flaws, such as incorrect relative clauses ('adults which have age between') and preposition errors ('loan taken by library members'). There are also frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'In pie chart, the data shown'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic grammatical accuracy, including correct verb tenses, prepositions, articles, and plurals, while gradually incorporating accurate complex sentence patterns.
