Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the age distribution, total loans over time, and loan categories. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precision. For instance, the overview lacks a clear summary of the overall trends, and the description of the line graph relies heavily on vague descriptions like 'more than 15000' and 'more than 20000' rather than accurately detailing the peaks, troughs, and final figures provided in the source data. While key features are identified, such as the most common age group and the dominance of fiction loans, the lack of a strong overarching summary and the somewhat superficial reporting of the line graph keep the task response at this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer should ensure all major trends are highlighted clearly in an introductory overview and report numerical data with greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the pie chart of members to the line graph of loans, and finally to the table of loan categories. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate these distinct visual sources. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Regarding total number of loans', 'While between', and 'From 2014', which help guide the reader through the data. However, referencing is sometimes mechanical, and transitional phrases can feel abrupt. To move further up the band scale, the writer needs to demonstrate more sophisticated and flexible use of cohesive devices, ensuring that relationships between data points are linked smoothly without relying on repetitive sentence openings.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'proportion', 'downward trend', and 'represented'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and word-form inaccuracies, such as 'adult that was 51%' (instead of 'adults, accounting for 51%'), 'loans taken for childrens and adult fiction' (where 'taken out' or 'borrowed' would be more natural collocations), and a spelling error in 'Chidren's non fiction'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a lack of precision. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire and focus on precise word choices, correct word forms, and natural collocations when discussing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at relative clauses and prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the library called Little Chalfont', 'adult non fiction'), pluralization issues ('In 2007 the total number of loans were', 'childrens and adult fiction which was'), and punctuation errors like missing spaces after full stops ('15000.It increased'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and communication is maintained. To improve, the writer needs to exercise greater control over subject-verb agreement, article usage, and punctuation, while increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
