Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially and falls slightly short of the minimum word count requirement of 150 words. While the student attempts to cover the various data sets provided in the prompt—such as the age groups, loan categories, and the overall loan trend between 2007 and 2016—the information is presented in a somewhat limited and disjointed manner. Important trends are only partially developed, and there are factual inaccuracies or imprecise readings of the data, such as stating that '55% of adults from 18 to 64' were members when the chart indicates 51, and referring to loans being approved 'by bank'. The overview provided in the second paragraph is underdeveloped and lacks clarity regarding the main overall trends. To reach a higher band, the response would need to safely exceed the word length requirement, present a clearer and more accurate selection of key features, and avoid misinterpreting the source data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, with an introduction, body paragraphs marked by sequential transition words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly', and a brief concluding overview. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by abrupt shifts between unrelated data points. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the awkward transition 'Whereas children's ficition contributed highest loan as well as children's DVDs took lowest' and the repetitive use of listing adverbs. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structuring of sentences within paragraphs fails to build a coherent argument. To improve, the student should ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence, use referencing more effectively to connect sentences, and employ a wider range of cohesive devices naturally rather than relying on formulaic sequencing markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic words and repeats terms such as 'members', 'loans', and 'contributed' frequently throughout the text. There are also noticeable spelling mistakes, such as 'ficition' instead of fiction and 'approbed' instead of approved, alongside awkward lexical choices and word formation errors like 'young age group' instead of young adults and 'percentage children' instead of percentage of children. These errors and the restricted vocabulary range cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher score. To progress, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire to include less common vocabulary and synonyms, ensure correct word formation, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few poorly constructed complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('members in library'), incorrect prepositions ('members are in library', 'members in 18 to 64 age group'), and tense or agreement issues ('the diagram and table illustrates', 'number of loans approbed'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader in places. To achieve a higher band, the student must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with good control, use articles and prepositions accurately, and eliminate frequent basic errors in verb forms and subject-verb agreement.
