Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count of 150 words, finishing abruptly at 140 words with an incomplete sentence ending in 'Furthermore'. The writing only partially addresses the task. While the student attempts to report on the pie chart and line graph, the information presented is inaccurate and poorly selected. For example, the student misinterprets the age group data from the chart, claiming that 'half of the library portion consumed by the adults by 51 %', whereas the figure 51% refers specifically to adults aged 18 to 64. Furthermore, the overall trends in the loan data are incorrectly described, stating that loans fluctuated between 12000 and 21000, missing the key upward trajectory and accurate starting point shown in the visual data. The response lacks a clear overview and fails to make appropriate comparisons between the different charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting to introduce different visual elements in separate sections, but it suffers from a lack of clear progression and logical sequencing. The use of cohesive devices is inadequate and mechanical, with abrupt transitions such as 'As per the provided pie-chart information' and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is poorly controlled, and the text trails off into an incomplete concluding paragraph. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between the data points. To improve, the student needs to structure the response with distinct paragraphs for an introduction, an overview, and detailed body paragraphs connected by a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with appropriate word choice and collocation, such as 'portion consumed by the adults' and 'initial year of load'. There are also frequent spelling and capitalization errors, such as 'little chalfont' and 'fluctuate' instead of past tense forms. While there are some attempts to use less common items like 'categories' and 'information', inaccuracies in word formation and terminology prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and sentence boundaries, such as run-on sentences lacking proper periods or commas (e.g., 'library in the little chalfont library Despite pie-chart describe...'). Verb tenses and forms are also handled inaccurately, with present tense used inappropriately for past data ('The bar graph illustrated... Despite pie-chart describe... it is fluctuate'). These persistent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of grammatical structures.
