IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the percentage of library members of different age group, while the accompanying table depicts how much loan is requested for different categories.
Overall, adults in the age range of 18-64 are the major contributors as library members. In addition, more than half of the loan is attributed to children and adult fiction books together. Moreover, the total number of loan fluctuated over the period of 10 years.
To begin with, in 2016, 51% of the library members were in the age limit of 18-64, 22% were children, young adults shared 15% and adults over 65 accounted for only 12%.
Additionally, fiction books demanded the highest loan in 2016, with 76% contribution from both children's and adult fictional books. However, other categories were less significant in terms of loan.
The total figures of loan were the least in 2007. This graph showed oscillations throughout starting from about 16000 in 2016, reaching a peak of approximately 21000 in 2011, followed by some variations before finally settling at 22000 in 2016

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features from the pie chart, the table, and the line graph, and makes appropriate comparisons. An overview is provided, highlighting key trends and proportions, such as the dominant adult age group and the popularity of fiction. However, certain parts are slightly under-developed; for example, the line graph description contains a slight chronological misread and some minor inaccuracies regarding the numbers (such as mentioning starting from about 16000 in 2016 instead of 2007). To reach the next band, the response would need to ensure absolute precision when reading data points and provide a more fully developed overview of all visual elements without minor reporting slips.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas, dividing the description into a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs for each chart type. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on standard transitional markers like "To begin with," "Additionally," and "Moreover," rather than more flexible, integrated cohesive devices. Referencing is generally clear, though smoother linking between the various datasets would elevate the essay to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully attempting less common terminology such as "attributed to," "fluctuated," and "oscillations." There are, however, some slight lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as "how much loan is requested" instead of "the percentage of loans," and "total number of loan" instead of "loans." Spelling is generally accurate, and these minor lexical slips do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use more precise collocations and a wider, more natural variety of less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like "while the accompanying table depicts" and relative clauses effectively. There are some grammatical errors, such as singular/plural inconsistencies ("age group" instead of "age groups", "total number of loan" instead of "loans", and "fictional books demanded the highest loan" where articles or prepositions could be tighter). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict grammatical control throughout.
