Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart shows the information on the age of library members in 2016, while the table illustrates the distribution of the loan category in the same year, and on the other hand, the bar graph represents the overall amount of loans between 2007 to 2016.

Overall, adults aged 18-64 accounted for the largest proportion of library members, whereas children's fiction and adult fiction were the highest percentages, and the maximum number of loans were spent in 2106 and the least amount spent in 2007.

The pie chart demonstrated that adults aged 18-64 hold 51%; more than a quarter were children, and young adults aged 13-17 represented 15%, and the rest of the 12% accounted for adults aged 65 and over. Regarding the loan category, children's fiction and adult fiction were equally popular at 38% each. Adult non-fiction was responsible for 13%, while children's non-fiction represented only 6%.. Young adults and adult audiobooks accounted for the same percentage 2%. The only category that shared the lowest percentage was children's DVDs, and that was 1%.

The number of loans was approximately 15,000 in 2007, rose significantly in 2010, and reached slightly more to the 20,00and than it remained stable in 2011. It declined in 2013, but the figure increased again and reached over 20,000 in 2016

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the three visual sources and reporting key data such as the highest percentage of library members and the leading loan categories. However, some aspects are more fully covered than others, resulting in minor unevenness in development. For instance, while the pie chart and the table are described in considerable detail, the overview's reference to the bar graph contains an awkward chronological slip ('spent in 2106' instead of 2016) and a slight over-generalisation regarding the loan amounts. Nevertheless, all main features—such as adults aged 18-64 being the largest group and fiction dominating loans—are correctly identified and supported with figures from the provided text.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to the respective charts. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the clunky transition 'and on the other hand, the bar graph represents' in the opening sentence. Referencing and paragraph transitions could be smoother; for instance, the sudden shift from the loan categories into the longitudinal trend in the final paragraph lacks a unifying cohesive link. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the different visual elements, contributing to an overall logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'proportion', 'distribution', 'accounted for', and 'longitudinal trends'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'number of loans were spent in 2106' (loans are recorded or made, not spent) and minor spelling or typographical confusions like '2106' for 2016 and '2007' typed as '200,and'. While these lexical slips and awkward word choices do not impede communication, they reflect a limited precision that prevents the writing from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors present, such as incorrect preposition use ('hold 51%' instead of 'held 51%'), article omission, and awkward phrasing in complex structures ('reached slightly more to the 20,00and than it remained stable'). Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, including a stray double period at the end of a sentence. Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences remain comprehensible and structurally sound.
