Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially, reflecting a limited ability to adequately select and report the main features of the visual data. While the student attempts to mention some figures from the charts—such as '38 percent' for children's fiction and the demographic breakdown—the selection is confused, and the information is often misreported or contradictory. For example, the student states that 'in 2016 the amount for loan was at highest figure and it declines in 2007 at 15,000', which reverses or muddies the actual trend shown in the line graph. Furthermore, the overview attempted in the first and final paragraphs lacks clarity and accuracy, merely repeating fragmented details rather than summarising the main trends across the period. To reach higher bands, the writer must carefully examine the data to report accurate figures and trends without factual distortions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently, leading to a response that lacks clear overall progression. Although the text is broken into short paragraphs, the internal logic of each paragraph is weak, and sentences are strung together without a clear sense of direction or comparison. Transitional phrases like 'to start with' and 'in conclusion' are used mechanically and do not accurately reflect the structural organisation or the content of a data summary. Reference words and cohesive devices are inadequate or confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. To improve in this area, the writer needs to group related data logically—such as separating the line graph trends from the pie chart and table breakdown—and use clear referencing to link sentences together smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a limited range that struggles to convey the specific details of the visual data effectively. Throughout the text, the writer relies heavily on simple terms and makes frequent lexical errors, such as confusing 'aged' with 'age' ('Adults from 18 to 64 aged') and misspelling words ('chlidrens'). Word choice is frequently inaccurate, as seen in phrases like 'the amount for loan was at highest figure' instead of referring to the number of loans or library members. While these basic words are just about adequate to communicate the barest intent, the errors and lack of less common lexical items restrict the precision required for academic writing. To progress, the student should expand their vocabulary related to statistics, trends, and proportions, and practice correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with basic grammar, including missing or incorrect articles ('the chart illustrates the information about a library in a Chalfont town'), incorrect prepositions ('at below than'), and faulty subject-verb agreement or sentence fragments. Punctuation and capitalization are also unreliable, with sentences beginning with lowercase letters ('to start with', 'in conclusion'). Attempts at more complex structures are either absent or faulty, and frequent errors distort the intended meaning of various statements. To achieve higher bands, the writer must focus on foundational grammatical accuracy, including proper verb tenses, article usage, and sentence construction.
