Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the age distribution of library members at Little Chalfont library along with showcasing data about book loans.

Overall, it can be seen from the pie chart that majority of the library members are adults. Followed by in decreasing shares are children, young adults and senior citizens. The table demonstrates the most loaned book category is the fiction books. The next most popular category is the non-fiction books. While DVD's, young adults and audio books have relatively small shares. The bar chart depicts that the total number of books loaned from 2007 to 2010 increased gradually, but in the subsequent years the number remained pretty stable.

More than half of the library members are adults. Children constitute 22 percent of the total library members. The young adults and senior citizens take up 15 and 12 percent shares respectively. During 2016, the most loaned books belonged to children's fiction and adult's fiction categories, together they accounted for more than 3 quarters of the total books loaned. Adult non-fictions books accounted for 13 percent of the books issued and children's non-fiction took a 6 percent share. Audio books and the young adult category were only 2 percent each of the total. Finally, children DVD's were the lowest amount of items issued, accounting for only 1 percent.

The bar chart shows an initial incline in the total number of loans issued from 2007 to 2010, where the number grew from around 16,000 to almost 21,000. In the following years, the total number of loans remained above 20,000 barring 2013, where the number dipped slightly below 20,000. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and effectively reporting the main features of the charts and table. The key data points, such as the age distribution of library members, the popularity of fiction books, and the trend in total loans from 2007 to 2016, are accurately selected and well-supported with specific figures from the visual data. Ideas are logically developed, and comparisons are made where relevant, such as noting that children's and adult fiction together accounted for more than three quarters of total loans. Only very minor omissions are present, which places this aspect of the work at a high standard. To reach the highest level, the overview could integrate the trends more tightly with the categorical breakdowns into a single, cohesive statement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with a general overview followed by detailed paragraphs for membership age groups, loan categories, and the loan trends over time. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct visual elements. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, such as 'While', 'During 2016', and 'In the following years', though some transitions between sentences occasionally feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher standard, the flow between paragraphs could be enhanced by more sophisticated referencing and seamless linking phrases that connect the overarching trends with the specific data points without relying on formulaic structuring.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items such as 'distribution', 'constitute', 'accounted for', and 'incline'. Word choices are generally appropriate for an academic report, though there are occasional lapses in collocation or word form, such as writing 'adult's fiction' instead of 'adult fiction' and 'children DVD's' instead of 'children's DVDs'. Spelling is generally accurate, and communication is never impeded. To move to a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical chunks and demonstrate tighter control over possessive forms and pluralisation in compound phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent attempt at complex structures such as relative clauses and subordinate time clauses. Good control is shown over past and present tenses when describing the historical data and static charts. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing apostrophes in plurals or possessives like 'adult non-fictions books' and minor agreement slips. Because errors persist and the variety of complex structures is somewhat limited rather than consistently error-free across a wide range, the work sits at a level where complex sentences contain occasional faults. To improve, the writer needs to eliminate minor punctuation oversights and increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
