IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The Pie chart and the line graph represent the total number of loans and provide information regarding a public library in a town named Little Chalfont.
The pie chart shows the proportion of library members by age in 2016. The largest proportion represents the contribution of adults between 18 and 64, and the smallest contribution is from adults aged 65 or above. The contribution of children is more than that of young adults aged 13 to 17. It indicates that active membership is higher among adults than among children, young adults and older people.
However, the line graph shows that the number of ongoing loans by category of books available in the library gradually surged from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, the number of loans rose to roughly 21,000, then dropped in 2012 and 2013 simultaneously. This amount then gradually increased again from 2014, and the peak is shown in 2016 at approximately 22,000. Throughout the period from 2007 to 2016, numerous fluctuations are seen in the closing loan amount.
Furthermore, the data shows the loan amount in various categories of books present in the library in the year 2016. The children's fiction books and adult fiction books show a higher loan amount at 38% each. Non-fiction books are lower in percentage than the fiction books, at 6% and at children's section and 13% in the adult section. Moreover, leftover books show the lowest percentage of loans. mostly belong to audiobooks and DVDs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by presenting information from the pie chart, line graph, and table, and attempts to make comparisons. However, the interpretation of the data is occasionally inaccurate or confused. For instance, the student misidentifies the line graph data, which actually represents the total number of loans over time (2007-2016), describing it instead as the 'number of ongoing loans by category of books'. Furthermore, the description of the pie chart misses the actual age bracket labels, though it correctly identifies the largest and smallest proportions. While the key features are partially selected, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately reported due to misreading the visual data, preventing a fully clear presentation of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the pie chart, then the line graph, and finally the table of categories. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each visual component of the prompt. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'Furthermore' and 'However'. Referencing between sentences is generally clear, though the progression between ideas could be smoother. While information is logically sequenced, the occasional misuse of cohesive devices and mechanical links keeps the structure from achieving a more fluid organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their points clearly. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary and analytical verbs, such as 'proportion', 'gradually surged', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, referring to the line graph data as 'ongoing loans' rather than 'total number of loans' is imprecise, and the phrase 'leftover books' in the final paragraph is unnatural for describing library loan categories. Spelling and word-choice errors do occasionally occur, but they do not impede communication, ensuring the response meets the requirements for this lexical level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting various subordinate clauses and comparative structures such as 'The contribution of children is more than that of young adults'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'at 6% and at children's section', which involve minor prepositional and article inaccuracies. Punctuation is generally controlled, and sentences are mostly structured correctly. While errors in grammar do appear, they are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without significant difficulty.
