Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart illustrates the information about a public library in Little Chalfont.

Overall, the majority of library members in age are adults between 18 to 64, with 51% of the members in 2016. Children's fiction and Adult fiction got the highest portion of the loans, 38%, and Children's DVDs had the lowest loan portion, 1%. The comparative graph shows the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.

Children's fiction and Adult fiction sit at the top of total loans by category 2016, with 38% each, while Children's DVDs and Adult audiobooks are at the bottom with the lowest proportion of loans. Children's DVDs with only 1% and Adult audio books with 2%.

On the other hand, the graph shows the total number of loans between 2007 to 2016. In 2007, the loan stayed just over 15000 but then we can see the gradual increase in 2008 and 2009. From 2010 to 2012 the loans significantly increased with approximately 22000, then fluction over the next 3,4 years untill 2016 the loans remain at just over 22000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important features accurately: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group at 51%, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares at 38% each, and children’s DVDs are the smallest category at 1%. You also describe the overall rise in loans from 2007 to 2016. However, the overview is incomplete: it does not report the age-group figures beyond the largest group, and the trend description misses the key pattern of a rise to around 21,000, a dip, and then a recovery to about 21,700. The claim that loans reached approximately 22,000 from 2010 to 2012 is imprecise, as the values were mostly around 20,600–21,000. Covering these features more precisely would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate discussion of the category table and loan trend. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is uneven: the overview repeats details that are then restated in the next paragraph, while the age-group data are not developed after the opening sentence. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” do not express a clear contrast between the preceding category information and the graph. The final trend sentence also combines several stages in a confusing way. Organise the body around the three visuals, avoid repeating the same figures, and use links that accurately show sequence or contrast.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “majority,” “portion,” “gradual increase” and “proportion,” and the main information remains understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, such as “members in age,” “got the highest portion,” and “the loan stayed just over 15000.” There are also spelling errors in “fluction” and “untill,” and “sit at the top” is informal for an academic summary. Aim for more precise chart language and consistent forms, for example, “share of loans,” “accounted for,” and “the total rose.” This would make the description more natural and accurate without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and most of the intended meaning can be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in comparisons and sentence construction. For example, “adults between 18 to 64” should use “between 18 and 64,” while “from 2007 to 2016” is preferable to “between 2007 to 2016.” The fragment “Children’s DVDs with only 1% and Adult audio books with 2%” needs a main verb, and “then fluction over the next 3,4 years untill 2016 the loans remain” lacks clear sentence boundaries and consistent tense. Use complete sentences, check prepositions in paired expressions, and keep past-tense reporting consistent.
