Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies one relevant feature: children’s fiction accounts for 38% of loans, and it attempts an overall statement about this category. However, it does not adequately summarise the charts: the age profile and the trend in total loans from 2007 to 2016 are omitted, and the comparison with 2007 confuses a year’s total loans with a category’s percentage. The statement about DVDs is also unclear and does not accurately compare the 1% figure with adult fiction at 38%. The response is largely incomplete rather than a developed report. It contains 76 words, below the required 150; the 10 words copied from the prompt were excluded from that count. To improve, include a clear overview and select key figures from all three visuals.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a body introduced by “First” and “Secondly.” These markers show an effort to sequence information. However, the ideas do not progress clearly because the comparisons are incomplete or confusing, and the response ends abruptly without covering the other charts. Connections such as “than” in “the large amount of the loan … than percentage” do not make the relationship between the figures clear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main comparisons, and group related information logically—for example, the membership profile and loan categories, followed by the loan trend. Clearer linking and reference to what each figure represents would make the report easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “charts,” “percentage,” “loan,” and category names such as “children DVDs” and “adult fiction.” This shows an attempt to describe the visual data, but the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “percantage,” “childerans firction,” and “little Chalfort”; the chart title is Little Chalfont. Phrases such as “large amount of the loan” and “less amount loan” are also imprecise for describing proportions. Build a small set of accurate chart-reporting expressions, such as “accounted for,” “the proportion of loans,” and “the total number of loans,” and check spelling of category labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few sentence forms, including an opening statement, an overview, and sentences introduced by “First” and “Secondly.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors often make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “The charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the information than the high percentage” does not form a complete, clear clause. The sentence beginning “First the given data shows” also lacks a clear grammatical comparison, and the final sentence is unfinished. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use straightforward comparison patterns such as “X accounted for 38%, compared with Y at 1%.” Check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries before finishing.
