Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie chart, table and bar graph provides the information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Overall, the pie chart shares the proportion of library members by their age, while the table reveals the data of category wise loans taken by different library members. Moreover, the bar graph depicts the data of how much amount of loans were taken over a period of 16 years.

Firstly, the pie chart shows proportion of 51% membership for the library were taken by the adults between 18 year to 64 year age. Just below a quarter children's were members of the library followed by 15% and 12% of memberships were taken by young adults and adult age 65 and over respectively.

Secondly, the table shows category wise book loans. Notably, 38% of the loans were taken for the children's and adult fiction books in 2016. The least people was interested in children's DVDs at around 1%. Moreover, 2% loans were approved of young adults and adult audio books, which were second last among all the categories of books.

Finally, the bar graph represents in 2007, around 16000 loans were approved, which were the less number among all the years. From 2007 to 2008 loans were increased to 18000 and remained stable till 2009 after that, total number of loans were fluctuated from 2009 to 2015 around 18000 to 21000. In 2016, loans were rose slightly to around 22000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three visuals and identify several important features: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and total loans rise overall. The category figures are mostly reported accurately. However, the age figures are misread: children account for 22%, not “just below a quarter” only if interpreted loosely, while the 15% and 12% groups are correctly identified; more importantly, the chart gives 12% for adults aged 65 and over. The loan trend also needs more precise reporting: loans rise to about 21,000 in 2011, dip and fluctuate, then reach their peak in 2016. Calling the period “16 years” is inaccurate; it covers 2007–2016. The overview is present, but the main trends could be more clearly synthesised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the membership, loan categories, and annual totals. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow. This organisation is effective, though the linking can feel mechanical because each paragraph follows the same numbered pattern. Some references are also unclear: “which were the less number” does not clearly identify the comparison, and “after that” could be tied more explicitly to the year 2011. To strengthen cohesion, group related comparisons and use more precise links, such as “By contrast” or “After peaking in 2011,” while ensuring each pronoun or comparison has an unmistakable reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “membership,” “category,” “fiction,” “fluctuated,” and “remained stable.” These choices help communicate the chart information, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for describing data: “category wise loans,” “loans were approved,” and “the least people was interested” do not fit the context well. “The less number” is also an imprecise way to describe the lowest total. Aim for standard chart language such as “share of loans,” “loans were borrowed,” and “the lowest figure.” More precise vocabulary would make comparisons clearer and reduce awkward phrasing, while retaining the useful range already attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the information remains understandable. There are, however, some recurring errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “the pie chart, table and bar graph provides” should use a plural verb, while “the least people was interested” has an agreement error. The phrase “loans were rose” uses an incorrect verb form, and “the proportion of 51% membership … were taken” has an awkward and faulty sentence structure. Some age descriptions also need consistent plural forms, such as “18 years to 64 years.” These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Practise concise comparison sentences and check subject–verb agreement and past-tense forms.
