IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The following charts illustrate a comparison between the age of library members in the year 2016, and the bar chart also demonstrates the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016. The table also further exemplifies the aged - categorial loans in 2016.
Overall, the pie chart signifies the comparison between different age groups of the library members, with adults concealing a significant percentage of the library membership. The table illustrates the categories of loans in 2016 with children's fiction and adult fiction being the largest. The bar chart demonstrates that despite the substantial number of loans in the 9 years, 2011 and 2016 seem to have the highest registered loans.
The pie chart focuses on showing how many of the members are children, young adults (13-17), adults from 18-64 and elderly adults of 65 or above. It shows that adults between 18-64 had the highest members of 51% of the total members list. Followed up by children with 22% and young and elderly adults covering between 12 to 15%. The table further exemplifies that children's fiction and adult fiction had the highest borrowing time, covering up to 38% each, pursued by adult non-fiction with 13% entirely. Other categories contributed substantially less than the above mentioned, accounting between 1 to 7%. Lastly the complete amount of loans taken between the years [redacted phone] were notably large, however, 2011 and 2016 encompassed the highest registers, of about 20,000 loans with other years such as 2007 having the lowest at approximately 15,000 loans and majority of the years ranging between 18,000 to 22,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all three visuals and gives a clear overview: adults form the largest membership group, fiction categories lead borrowing, and loans remain high overall. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 51% adult membership and the two 38% loan shares. The main imprecision is that the loan chart’s peak is described as 2011 and 2016, although 2016 is the highest point and 2011 is lower; both are also rounded to about 20,000, obscuring the rise to roughly 21,700. The statement that other categories account for “between 1 to 7%” overlooks adult non-fiction at 13%. These are limited over-generalisations; more precise comparisons and clearer identification of the actual peak would strengthen an otherwise well-covered summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details, and it addresses the visuals in a sensible order. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Followed up by,” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “the pie chart,” “the table,” and “the bar chart,” and some links do not express the relationship precisely. For example, “Followed up by children” is an awkward fragment-like transition, while the final sentence combines the overall trend, peak years, and low point in a crowded sequence. More controlled referencing and a separate, focused comparison of the loan trend would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “comparison,” “categories,” “accounting,” and “approximately.” The writer also attempts less common terms, but several are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “adults concealing a significant percentage” should describe adults as comprising or representing a share, and “aged - categorial loans” is unclear. “Highest registered loans” and “highest borrowing time” are also imprecise collocations. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Prefer standard data-reporting language such as “accounted for,” “recorded,” “share,” and “loan total,” and avoid using elaborate synonyms when a direct term is clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “despite the substantial number of loans…” and relative information in the description of age groups. The main points remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “adults between 18-64 had the highest members of 51%” has an unclear noun phrase and faulty structure; “Followed up by children” is not a complete sentence; and “the complete amount of loans … were” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The final sentence also contains several clauses joined by commas, making its structure difficult to control. Use complete sentences, check agreement, and divide long comparisons into clearer units.
