IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given pie chart and bar graph provides an insight on a public library in a town known as Little Chalfont.
It was evident from the pie chart that adults aged 18-64 are the main characters in library. Whereas, children are the second partcipants joining library.
The total loans are categorized in relation to distinct genre being studied in the library. Children fiction is a major contributor in loans category, reported as 38%. Conversely, non-fiction books are 6% in this aspect. Children's DVDs and young adults are 1% and 2% respectively while discussing about total loans category. Adult fiction retained 38% which is almost 2 times more as compared to non fiction genre. Audio adult books are in this category as 2%.
Hence, it was understood from the statistics that children's fiction played a pivotal role in the total loans category in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response includes some accurate details about the 2016 loan categories, such as children’s and adult fiction each accounting for 38%, and children’s non-fiction making up 6%. However, it omits the line graph entirely and gives only a partial account of the membership chart: adults aged 18–64 are identified as the largest group, but the figures and the other age groups are not reported accurately or fully. The statement that children are the “second” group is incorrect; young adults account for 15%, compared with children at 22%. The overview is also limited to loan categories rather than the main features across all charts. The response is 7 words below the 150-word minimum. Cover each visual and summarise the key comparisons and trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the library, discusses membership, then moves to loan categories and ends with a concluding statement. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is limited because the line graph is not addressed, and the paragraphing does not clearly separate an overview from supporting details. Linking expressions such as “Whereas,” “Conversely,” and “Hence” are used, but some connections are awkward or do not express a clear contrast. For example, “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than linking two complete ideas. Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by focused paragraphs for the charts, using transitions only where they clarify the relationship between information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
There is enough vocabulary to communicate the general topic, including “categorized,” “contributor,” and “pivotal role,” and the response uses relevant terms such as “fiction” and “non-fiction.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing statistical visuals: “main characters in library,” “second participants joining library,” and “genre being studied in the library” do not accurately describe membership or loan categories. “Adult audio books” is also an awkward label. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear, while “partcipants” contains a spelling error. Prefer direct, conventional chart language such as “largest membership group,” “share of total loans,” and “accounted for.” This would improve precision without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mixture of simple statements and some more complex forms, including “It was evident from the pie chart that…” and a sentence beginning “while discussing…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but there are recurring problems with sentence construction and grammatical control. “The given pie chart and bar graph provides” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “Whereas, children are…” is an incomplete sentence. The phrase “children fiction is a major contributor in loans category” also lacks appropriate articles and has an awkward grammatical pattern. Some sentences rely on similar structures, limiting the range. Practise complete sentences, agreement, and article use, and build comparisons with clear clauses—for example, “Children accounted for 22%, while young adults made up 15%.”
