Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main categories and make a useful comparison: children’s and adult fiction each account for 38% of loans, while children’s DVDs are the smallest category at 1%. You also recognise that loans are lowest in 2007 and highest in 2016. However, the overview misstates the membership data: adults aged 18–64 are the largest group at 51%, not the smallest, and the smallest group is those aged 65 and over at 12%. Several figures and trends are also inaccurate: 2016 is about 21,700 loans, not 23,000, and loans generally rise from 2007, with fluctuations, rather than rising slowly throughout to 2013. More accurate selection and reporting of the key data would make the summary clearer and more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and it attempts to group membership, loan categories and yearly totals. This gives the reader some sense of the chart’s different features. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear: the second paragraph moves from young adults to children and then to loan categories without explaining the relationship between these details. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Nevertheless” are used where no clear contrast or concession follows, and the final paragraph repeats the 2016 and 2007 extremes. Organise the details by chart, use comparisons to connect related figures, and choose linking words that accurately show the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You attempt vocabulary relevant to describing charts, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “highest,” “lowest” and “total number of loans.” These choices show awareness of the language needed for this task. However, spelling and word-form errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow, as in “propartion,” “persentage,” “chilidrens” and “lone.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “highest amount” for the number of loans and “members are get loans.” Use accurate chart vocabulary consistently, and check spelling and collocations. For example, describe the figures as the “share of members” or “number of loans,” and say that a category “accounted for” a given percentage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, including contrastive structures beginning with “However” and “Nevertheless.” Nevertheless, sentence construction is often faulty, and errors frequently obscure relationships between ideas. For example, “The pic chart, table and bar chart illustrates give information” combines incompatible verb forms, while “2007 to 2013 was go slowly rise” has an incorrect verb pattern. There are also problems with articles, agreement and punctuation, as in “In 2016 year” and the missing space after “However” in the overview. Build reliable simple sentences first, then add clauses using accurate verb forms and punctuation. A model pattern is: “Loans rose from about 15,700 in 2007 to 19,000 in 2008.”
