IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart, a bar graph and a table below provides data regarding a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Overall, early to middle aged adults accounted for more than half of library members, fiction books contributed almost three quarters in the loans category. Despite slight fluctuations, total number of loans had upside trend over the period.
In 2016, library users were diverse in all age groups. Adults (18-64) make up to 51% from the total members, childrens represented just below a quarter of total members with second highest group in the library. Adults (65 and over) were attracted less to public places with only 12 being the lowest count in the library community, teenagers between the age 13 to 17 contributed to only 15 members.
Morever, the total number of loans was recorded at 16 thousand in 2007, which saw a gradual rise until 2017, followed by a slight drop before reaching the highest loan of around 22 thousand in the year 2016. Children and adult fiction books had the largest proportion of 76 percent in the loan category, which was filled more with non-fiction books by 19 percent, young adults and audio books accounted for 2 percent each and children's DVDs with only 1 percent of the total loan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover all three visuals and give a clear overview: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction dominates loans, and total borrowing rises overall despite fluctuations. The reported membership figures and category shares are broadly accurate, including the combined 76% for fiction. This meets the task well, with some features already selected and compared effectively. However, the trend description contains a significant timeline error: loans rose to a peak of about 21,000 in 2015 and then reached roughly 21,700 in 2016; there is no 2017 figure or intervening drop. Also, “early to middle aged” is not a precise description of the 18–64 group. Correcting the trend and making comparisons more exact would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a summary of the main features, and paragraphs covering membership and loans. The overview helps the reader identify the key patterns before the details. However, the final paragraph combines the time-series trend with the category breakdown, so the two visuals’ information is less clearly separated. Some linking is also awkward or unclear, particularly “which saw a gradual rise until 2017, followed by a slight drop,” where the sequence does not match the chart. Use one paragraph for the loan trend and another for the 2016 loan categories, and make references such as “this figure” or “the total” explicit. This would make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on basic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “proportion,” “fluctuations,” and “largest proportion,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices: “upside trend” is not idiomatic in this context, “make up to 51% from” is an awkward way to report a share, and “attracted less to public places” does not accurately describe the data. “Filled more with non-fiction books” is also unclear. Spelling errors such as “Morever” and “childrens” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language such as “increased overall,” “accounted for 51% of members,” and “represented a smaller share.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the overview sentence beginning “Despite slight fluctuations” shows an effort to vary structure. Some grammatical errors remain, although the main message is usually understandable. For example, “The pie chart, a bar graph and a table below provides” has a plural subject and needs “provide”; “Adults (18-64) make up” shifts into the present tense while describing 2016 data; and “with only 12 being the lowest count” is an awkwardly constructed clause. The sentence about the trend also has a confusing sequence of clauses. Keep tense consistent when reporting past data, check subject–verb agreement, and divide long sentences when their relationships are difficult to control.
