The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart illustrates the information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont, where it is showing a total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.

From 2016, total loans have been divided into seven categories, where children's fiction and adult fiction have same ratio of 38%.

In comparison, there are minor fluctuations in loans from 2007 to 2016. But 2011 and 2016 have same ratio of loans in chart. Year 2007 is showing lowest number of loans as compared to other years of loans.

Pie graph demonstrates the ages of different library members. Where adults from 18-64 are covering 51% of library members, according to 2016 figure. On the other hand, remaining parts are dividing between children, young adults and 65 above adults, where children are 22%.

As a conclusion, the chart shows overall data from 2007

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several relevant features, including the equal 38% shares for children’s and adult fiction, the 51% share of members aged 18–64, and the low point in loans in 2007. However, the response only partially covers the charts: it gives little detail about the loan trend, and the claim that 2011 and 2016 had the same number of loans is inaccurate (about 21,000 versus 21,700). The overview is also incomplete, ending with “overall data from 2007” rather than summarising the main patterns. The response is 129 words, below the required 150, which limits the opportunity to report and compare the key information. Develop the overview and include accurate comparisons across the three visuals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it moves from the loan categories to the trend and then to member ages, and it uses basic linking phrases such as “In comparison” and “On the other hand.” However, the progression is not consistently clear. The opening focuses on the time-series chart, while the next sentence abruptly shifts to categories, and “As a conclusion” introduces an unfinished summary. Sentence fragments such as “Where adults from 18-64…” also weaken the flow between ideas. Group the information into a clear introduction, an overview, and detail paragraphs, and use links to show meaningful comparisons rather than simply starting each point with a connector.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “total loans,” “categories,” “fluctuations,” and “library members,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “same ratio of loans,” “covering 51%,” and “remaining parts are dividing.” “Ratio” is not the best term for these percentages, and “covering” does not naturally describe a group’s share of membership. Use precise terms such as “proportion,” “accounted for,” and “share,” and vary verbs for describing trends, for example “rose,” “peaked,” or “remained relatively stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, but the range is limited and complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “The chart illustrates … where it is showing” has an awkward clause structure, while “Where adults from 18-64 are covering 51%” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. There are also errors in articles and agreement in “have same ratio” and “remaining parts are dividing.” These problems sometimes make relationships between ideas less clear, although the main message is usually recoverable. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, agreement, and tense when describing figures and trends.
