Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate the proportion of four categories of library members in Little Chalfont in 2016 and total number of loans taken from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, adults accounted for the largest share in the library with the highest percentage of loans category. Most number of loans were taken in 2016 after fluctuating throughout the period.

Adults were the most popular members of the library having a share of 51% followed by children at 22% while adults shared almost the half. Both children's fiction and Adult's fiction were the same percentage at 38% with adults leading in other categories such as non fiction and audio books, at 13% and 2% respectively, almost a double of childrens.

On the other hand, number of loans takens started at more than 15000 in 2007 and increased in the subsequent year to nearly 20,000 before fluctuating in the coming years. It remained stable throughout 2010 to 2012 at more than 20,000 before falling in 2013 to less than 20,000. It rose again steadly and reached highest point in 2016 at a around 22,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main features: adults form the largest membership group, fiction dominates loans, and total loans reach their peak in 2016 after changing over time. Several figures are reported accurately, including adults at 51%, children at 22%, and the two fiction categories at 38% each. This covers the task, but some details are incomplete or unclear. The membership figures for young adults (15%) and older adults (12%) are omitted, and the overview’s phrase “highest percentage of loans category” does not clearly explain the category pattern. The claim that adult non-fiction and audio books are “almost a double” of children’s is not supported: children’s non-fiction is 6%, while children’s DVDs are 1%. Include the missing comparisons and describe the loan categories more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the category data and the loan trend. The sequence from the general pattern to supporting figures is easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “before falling in 2013” help signal movement through the period. However, the overview combines membership and loan information in a way that is sometimes unclear, particularly “adults accounted for the largest share in the library with the highest percentage of loans category.” The third paragraph also shifts between membership and loan-category comparisons without a fully clear progression. Group the membership figures together, then compare loan categories, and use more precise links between these ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “fluctuating,” “remained stable,” and “reached highest point.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “most popular members” suggests popularity rather than the largest membership share, while “loans taken” and “highest percentage of loans category” are not natural descriptions of the data. There are also spelling or word-form slips, including “steadly,” “takens,” and “childrens.” Aim for precise chart language and check spelling and possessives. For example, use “members accounted for” and “loans issued” rather than the less natural phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast in “Both children's fiction and Adult's fiction were the same percentage at 38%” and the sequence describing loans rising and falling. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. In “Most number of loans were taken,” the article and agreement are incorrect; “the number of loans was highest” would be clearer. “Adults shared almost the half” also has an unclear structure, and “at a around 22,000” contains an unnecessary article. Review articles, singular/plural agreement, and sentence construction, while retaining the range of structures you attempt. More consistently accurate sentences would strengthen this response.
