Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie chart, table demonstrates a comparison of age groups and loans taken for multiple categories by town people of Little Chalfort. The bar graph display the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016 in that town.

Overall, adults aged18-64 are the highest proportion of members of library. In 2016, people used to borrow children's fiction more, among all other categories, whereas DVDs had the lowest rate of loan. The total number of loans maintained steady for a decade.

In pie chart, more than half of library members were adults (18-64), and children accounted for 22% followed by young adults (13-17) and adults aged 65 contributed 15% and 12% respectively. As for the table, least amount of loan was for children,s DVD with 1 %, and adult fiction and children's fiction had equal percentage of loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant features, including the dominance of adults aged 18–64, the equal shares for adult and children’s fiction, and children’s DVDs as the smallest loan category. However, the report is only partial and some details are inaccurate: adults aged 65 and over account for 12%, while young adults make up 15%, but these figures are assigned in the opposite order. The overview also says loans were steady, without describing the overall rise from about 15,700 in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016. The final fragment, “The largest figures,” leaves an important comparison unfinished, and several chart details are not reported. The response is also 10 words below the required minimum. Include a complete overview and select key figures from all three visuals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs referring to the membership chart and loan categories. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “As for the table” help signal shifts. However, there is no clear progression through all the information: the line graph is mentioned but not described, and the final standalone phrase, “The largest figures,” interrupts the report and leaves it incomplete. Some linking is also awkward, as in “followed by young adults … and adults aged 65 contributed,” where the relationships between the groups are difficult to follow. Organise the body into clear comparisons, cover each visual, and complete every sentence to create a more consistent progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “categories,” “accounted for,” and “percentage,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “loans taken for multiple categories” and “people used to borrow” do not clearly describe the chart’s figures, while “lowest rate of loan” is awkward. There are also noticeable spelling and form errors, such as “Little Chalfort” for “Little Chalfont” and “children,s.” The range is limited, with repeated use of “loan” and “percentage,” and the unfinished phrase “The largest figures” provides no precise information. Use accurate terms such as “library members,” “share of total loans,” and “the number of loans,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the opening overview communicates a main comparison. However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “The pie chart, table demonstrates,” which has faulty subject agreement and punctuation, and “The bar graph display,” where the verb does not agree with its subject. In “adults aged18-64,” spacing is missing, and the sentence about the age groups has an unclear construction: “followed by young adults … and adults aged 65 contributed.” The final fragment is not a complete sentence. Use a wider range of controlled sentence patterns, check subject–verb agreement and punctuation, and ensure each comparison is expressed in a complete, grammatically clear sentence.
