IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different ages of library members in 2016, while the table provides data on the percentage of total loans taken by different categories in 2016. Thirdly, the bar chart compares total number of loans taken over the 9 years from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, most of the members of Little Chalfont Library were adults, and the least were adults 65 and over. In the data shared by the table, children's fiction and adult fiction shared the same percent of loans. Ultimately, in the starting year that is 2007, the number of loans was minimum while in the ending it recorded the highest figure.

In the pie chart it can be clearly seen that adults were the most frequent age as the library participitants and eventually, the result of this was clearly seen in the table that adult fiction had relatively higher percentage of loans as compared to the others.

On the other hand, from the bar chart it can be seen that after 2007 there was an increase in the stats of loans until 2011. After that, there was a gradual decrease in the figures, but eventually, these numbers rose again steadily for next three years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover all three visuals and give a relevant overview: adults form the largest membership group, the two fiction categories have equal loan shares, and loans peak in the final year. These points are broadly supported by the data. However, some key details are missing or imprecise. The membership figures are not reported, and the overview calls people aged 65 and over the smallest group without noting that this is true only among the age groups shown; young adults are also a relatively small group. The trend description says loans decreased after 2011 and then rose for the next three years, but does not identify the fluctuations or give figures. Also, the claim that adult membership explains adult fiction loans is an unsupported causal link. Include selected figures and describe the trend more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and further discussion of the pie chart and bar chart. This makes the main information easy to locate. However, progression is not always smooth. “Thirdly” is an awkward transition in the introduction, and “Ultimately” does not clearly connect the overview’s points. The paragraph beginning “In the pie chart” repeats the idea that adults are the largest group and then links it to the loan table, rather than adding a distinct comparison. The final paragraph also gives a broad trend without clearly separating the rise, fluctuations, and ending peak. Use more purposeful paragraphing and references, and organise the details by chart or by the most important comparisons. This would make cohesion less mechanical and the progression clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “gradual decrease,” and “highest figure.” These choices communicate the main points, and you attempt some less common phrasing. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing charts: “library participitants,” “the result of this was clearly seen,” and “stats of loans.” There is also a spelling error in “participitants.” “Shared the same percent” is understandable but less natural than “accounted for the same proportion.” Aim for precise, conventional data-reporting language and avoid implying a cause where the charts only show a comparison. More accurate collocations would make the description clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. For example, the opening sentence combines two chart descriptions, while “After that, there was a gradual decrease…” gives a clear sequence. Some grammatical issues remain. In “compares total number of loans,” the article is missing before “total number”; “the least were adults 65 and over” has an unclear construction; and “for next three years” needs an article. The phrase “the most frequent age as the library participitants” also has an awkward grammatical structure. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Keep the sentence patterns varied while checking articles, noun phrases, and comparative constructions carefully.
