Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and reports several member-age figures, including 22% for children, 15% for young adults and 51% for adults aged 18–64. However, it stops mid-sentence at “The adults that were over” and does not provide an overview or describe the loan-category chart or the decade-long trend in total loans. As a result, most of the task is not addressed, and the information presented is very limited. The response is also below the required 150 words: it contains 78 words, with nine words copied from the prompt excluded from the count. To improve, complete the age comparison and summarise the main features of all three charts, selecting key figures rather than listing only part of one chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to introduce the visuals and distinguish their subjects, using phrases such as “The second chart shows total loans by category” and “third chart.” This gives the reader some sense of the intended order. However, the opening is confusing: it says “There are three charts first two show age,” then immediately identifies the second chart as showing loans by category. The response has no clear paragraph structure or progression from an overview to supporting details, and it ends abruptly. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the main comparisons, and connect ideas in a consistent order with clear references to each chart.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the subject and some data, with relevant terms such as “library member,” “young adults,” “percentage” and “total loans.” However, the range is narrow and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “show the information of a public library” and “The percentage of library member.” Repetition of “chart” and “shows” also limits variety. More precise task vocabulary would help describe the visuals and comparisons, for example “membership composition,” “loan categories,” “accounted for” and “loan totals fluctuated.” Aim to use these expressions accurately and avoid repeating the same basic wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response mainly uses short, simple statements, and the figures are generally presented in understandable sentence forms. There is an attempt at a longer sentence in “There are three charts first two show age,” but it lacks punctuation or a linking word, making the relationship between the clauses unclear. Other issues include the singular construction “The percentage of library member” and the incomplete final sentence, “The adults that were over.” The past-tense forms “was” and “were” are used inconsistently when describing the charts. Practise complete sentences with accurate articles and agreement, and use linking structures such as “while” or “whereas” to compare categories.
