Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the broad subject and give a basic overview that loans were highest in 2016 and lowest in 2007. You also report some category shares, including children’s fiction at 38% and children’s DVDs at 1%. However, the response addresses only part of the visual information: it omits the age profile of members entirely and gives little meaningful comparison of the loan categories. Several trend figures are inaccurate or confusing: for example, loans in 2014 were about 20,700, not 20,000, and 2013 was about 19,600, not a fall of 2,000. The account is therefore limited and under-developed, with some misreporting. To improve, select the main features from all three visuals and check each figure against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and overview before moving through yearly figures. The sequence from 2016 back towards 2007 gives the reader some sense of chronology, and linking words such as “firstly,” “moreover” and “furthermore” show an effort to connect points. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, and the repeated connectors often make the progression mechanical rather than clear. The movement between category percentages and annual loan totals is abrupt, while phrases such as “in 2011 it was approximately same as year 2012” are difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, group the time-series figures logically, and use fewer, more precise links.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “total number of loans,” “percentage,” “children’s fiction” and “approximately.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated uses of “it reduces” and “number lies between.” Some word choices and collocations make the report less natural, as in “loans are taken” and “the highest percentage is taken by.” Spelling errors such as “chalfont,” “yesr,” “pecent” and “inj” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Build a more accurate range for describing charts, using terms such as “accounted for,” “stood at,” “rose” and “declined,” and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses basic time references, but sentence structures are mostly simple or joined with repeated linking words. Frequent errors in agreement, articles, tense and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning unclear. For example, “total number of loans are taken” has faulty agreement and an unsuitable passive construction, while “in year 2015 the number loans taken are 21000” lacks grammatical elements and shifts tense. The sentence “in 2011 it was approximately same as year 2012” also needs an article and a clearer comparison. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly after full stops and around year references. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine comparisons using controlled clauses.
