IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrates the information regarding the age of library members in 2016, while the bar graph depicts total number of items lent from 2007 to 2016 and the table gives information about total lent items by category in 2016.
Overall, the figure of total number of items lent throughout the years fluctuated. Both children and adult fictions were the most borrowed item from the library while audio visual materials account for the least borrowed item.
More than half of the library members are adults within the age range of 18-64. Children make up 22% of the whole members while young adults and the elderly account for the minority with 15% and 12%, respectively. Fiction predominated all the other borrowed items making up 38% of the whole total for both adult and children. Children's DVD and adult audio books account for only 1% and 2%, respectively. Total number of borrowed items fluctuated from around 16000 to nearly 23000 from 2007 to 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all three visuals and selects relevant comparisons: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction leads the loan categories, and total loans rise overall despite fluctuations. The figures for the age groups and category shares are accurately reported. The overview is clear, but “fluctuated” alone understates the trend in the line graph: loans increased from about 15,700 in 2007 to roughly 21,700 in 2016, with a peak near the end. The final range of “around 16000 to nearly 23000” is broadly consistent but less informative than describing the overall rise and key turning points. More precise reporting of the trend would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction identifies the visuals, an overview highlights the main patterns, and the final paragraph gives supporting details. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “while,” “Overall,” and “respectively” help connect comparisons. However, the overview’s statement that loans “fluctuated” is not fully developed, and the final sentence repeats this point without explaining the overall upward movement. The paragraph combining membership figures, category shares, and the loan trend also moves between different visuals rather quickly. Grouping the membership and category data together, then describing the loan trend separately, would make the progression more controlled and the comparisons easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
There is a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “predominated,” “account for,” “minority,” and “fluctuated,” and the meaning is consistently clear. The writer also uses relevant labels such as “adult fiction” and “children’s DVD.” Some collocations and word choices are less natural or precise: “total number of items lent” is repeated, and “the most borrowed item” is awkward when referring to categories that each represent a share of loans. “Audio visual materials” is also broader than the specific category “adult audio books.” Using more precise terms such as “loans,” “loan category,” and “accounted for the smallest share” would improve flexibility and accuracy while retaining the clear, appropriate vocabulary already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a compound introduction with “while,” a comparison with “while,” and a sentence using “making up.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation is generally controlled. A few grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “the figure of total number,” the noun phrase needs an article or a different construction; “the total number of loans” would be more accurate. “Both children and adult fictions were” has an awkward plural construction, and “the most borrowed item” does not agree naturally with two categories. The phrase “the whole total” is also redundant. These are local issues rather than barriers to meaning; more consistent control of articles, number, and sentence phrasing would make the writing more polished.
