Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given charts illustrate the information about age of library members and percentage of book loans at a Little Chalfont Library in 2016 as well as total number of books which were loaned between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, it is clear that adult aged between 18-64 accounted for highest proportion of library members. Fiction books were highly loaned books in 2016. Furthermore, total number of loans significantly increased throughout the period.

In 2016, 51% of library members were from adults(18-64) group, 22% of them were childern, young adults(13-17) comprised 15%. Adults with age 65 or over remained the lowest at 12%. In loans category, children and adults fiction comprised the highest percentage with 38%. 13% of adult non-fiction books and 6% of children's non-fiction were borrowed. Young adults and adult audio books were only 2%. Only 1% of children's DVDs were loaned.

Total number of books increased considerably between 2007 and 2016. In 2007, number of books borrowed were more than 15,000 and it continued to increase with slight decraese in 2013 and peaked at more 20,000 in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover all three visuals and give a clear overview: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction leads the loan categories, and total loans rise overall. Most category figures are reported accurately. The main weakness is the trend chart: you mention a slight decrease in 2013 and the 2016 peak, but omit the approximate values and the earlier rise from about 15,700 to around 21,000 by 2011, followed by fluctuations. Also, “peaked at more 20,000” is imprecise because the final figure is about 21,700, the highest in the period. Selecting a few key turning points and describing them more precisely would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, with the membership and loan-category data grouped before the time-series chart. This gives the reader a clear progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “In 2016” help signal the stages of the report. The final paragraph, however, compresses the decade’s pattern into a general rise, a slight decrease, and a peak, so the sequence of fluctuations is not fully clear. Some links between ideas are also a little abrupt, particularly the move from the category figures to the trend. Use more precise time references and connect the chart’s key stages explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “comprised,” “percentage,” and “peaked,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices and spelling slips. “Highly loaned books” is not a natural way to describe the most borrowed categories; “most popular loan categories” would be clearer. “Total number of books” is less precise than “total number of loans,” and “remained the lowest” is awkward for a single-year comparison. The misspellings “childern” and “decraese” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling, while varying repeated terms such as “increased” and “books.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison of the two fiction categories. The main information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “adult aged between 18-64” needs a plural noun and a clearer age construction, while “adults(18-64) group” needs spacing and more accurate phrasing. In “In 2007, number of books borrowed were,” the article is missing and the subject–verb agreement is incorrect. There are also inconsistent article and plural patterns, as in “at more 20,000.” Review noun phrases, articles, agreement, and punctuation around parenthetical age ranges; more consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
