Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate the information about the proportion of members in various age groups, loans allocated to books and DVDs in 2016, and the commulative total of loan between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, the figure for adults aged 18-64 showed the highest membership among all age groups while adults and over 65 showed least number of memberships. The loan allocated to fiction books showed highest percentage whereas childeren dvds loan represented the lowest figure.

In the pie chart, adults aged 18-64 made up just over a half of the memberships in 2016. By contrast, adults 65 and over age bracket showed the lowest number of members, at 12%, followed by the young adults of age 13 to 17, at 15%. Furthermore, the bar chart hilighted that total number of loans showed slight fluctuations between 2007 and 2016, ranging from just over 15,000 to nearly 22,000.

Regarding table, both childrens and adults fiction made up 38% of the total loan in 2016. In contrast, children dvds recorded at lowest figure, at just 1%, followed by young adult books and audio books, at 2% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main patterns accurately: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and children’s DVDs the smallest. The overview also notes the broad fluctuation in loans, and the figures you give for the table and age groups match the data. This covers the task well, but some features are less fully reported: the membership figures for children and the overall loan trend are not described in detail, and the trend is reduced to a range rather than its rise from 2007 to 2011, dip, and subsequent recovery. Also, “adults and over 65” is unclear in the overview. A more complete overview and a few key trend points would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the charts and table. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “By contrast,” “Furthermore,” and “In contrast” help signal comparisons. However, the progression within the overview is not fully clear: “adults and over 65 showed least number” is ambiguous, and the loan trend is introduced in the age-group paragraph rather than being grouped with the other loan information. “Regarding table” also makes the transition abrupt. To improve cohesion, organise each paragraph around one visual or related comparison, and use clearer references when moving between data sets.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “made up,” “represented,” “fluctuations,” and “ranging from,” which communicates the main comparisons. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “commulative” should be “cumulative,” “childeren” and “childrens” should be “children” and “children’s,” and “loans allocated to books and DVDs” is an awkward description of the categories. “Memberships” is also less natural than “members” or “membership share” in this context. Aim for accurate collocations such as “accounted for” or “the proportion of loans,” and proofread spelling and possessive forms. The range is adequate, but control is not consistently precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast structure (“By contrast…”) and a participial phrase (“ranging from…”). Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following the data. Some grammatical problems are nevertheless noticeable. For example, “adults and over 65 showed least number of memberships” lacks a clear noun phrase and article, while “Regarding table” needs an article (“Regarding the table”). In “children dvds recorded at lowest figure,” the verb pattern is incomplete; write “Children’s DVDs recorded the lowest figure.” There are also inconsistencies in plural and possessive forms. Review articles, complete verb constructions, and noun forms, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
