Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies two relevant features: adults aged 18–64 are the largest membership group, and children’s and adult fiction account for the largest loan shares. It also notices that loans generally rose despite fluctuations. However, the overview is very brief and the report gives no supporting figures or meaningful comparisons across the charts; for example, it does not mention that both fiction categories represent 38%, or describe the rise from about 15,700 loans in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016. The required minimum length is not met: the response is 100 words short. Develop each chart’s main features with accurate data and comparisons to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, understandable order: it introduces the library, then gives an overall summary of membership, loan categories and the trend in total loans. The use of “Overall” helps signal the summary, and the ideas are broadly relevant. However, the response is only a few short sentences, so it does not develop a clear progression through the three visual elements or group details into a report structure. The transition between the membership figures and borrowing categories is abrupt, and there are no supporting details to connect the overview to the data. Use a brief introduction, a distinct overview, and organised detail paragraphs, with linking phrases such as “Regarding membership” and “In terms of loans.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the broad subject, with relevant terms such as “percentage,” “categories,” “borrowed” and “fluctuations.” However, the range is narrow and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “gives insights about” is less natural for describing a chart, “lones” is a spelling error for “loans,” and “kept on increasing” is imprecise because the figures fluctuate rather than rise continuously. “Books” also does not accurately cover all loan categories, which include DVDs and audiobooks. Use precise chart language such as “shows,” “accounted for,” “loaned items” and “rose overall.” A wider range of accurate terms for proportions and trends would make the report clearer and more appropriate to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response communicates its main points through simple sentence forms, and the final sentence attempts a contrast with “despite.” However, grammatical control is uneven. In “adults of age group 18-64 constitutes,” the plural subject requires “constitute,” and the phrase needs an article or a more natural construction, such as “adults aged 18–64 constitute.” The sentence beginning “While Children’s fiction…” is a dependent clause without a complete main clause, and its punctuation is faulty. There is also no space after the full stop in “percentage.While.” Use complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation. Adding a few accurately controlled complex sentences would improve the range as well as the clarity.
