Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the age of library members while the table shows total loans by category in 2016 in the little chalfont library. The bar chart compares total number of loans taken from 2007 to 2016. Overall, it can be seen that the highest percentage is of adults aged 18-64 while the lowest is of adults aged 65 and over.It is also noticebale that the highest loans were taken for children's fiction and adult fiction while the lowest for children's DVDs and the total number of loans taken were highest in the year 2011 and 2016.

In the year 2007, the loans taken rose steadily till 2011 with some fluctuations around 2012 and 2013 where it fell down and again saw a surge till 2016.

So from the chart given it is evident that different aged people i.e. children, young adults 13-17, adults 18-64 and adults 65 and over were present in the little chalfont library and loans taken were for different categories of the library from 2007 till 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main features of the charts: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and loans generally rise over the period. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The smallest membership group is adults aged 65 and over, but the lowest loan categories are children’s DVDs (1%), not both DVDs and an unspecified category. You also say loans were highest in 2011 and 2016; the chart shows the peak in 2016, while 2011 is lower. The trend description is relevant but underdeveloped: include key figures, such as the rise from about 15,700 in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016, and explain the fluctuations more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, beginning with an introduction and overview before describing the loan trend. This gives the reader a basic sense of the charts’ organisation. However, progression is limited: the final paragraph largely repeats that the library had different age groups and loan categories rather than adding a useful comparison. Linking is also somewhat mechanical, particularly “So from the chart given,” and the overview combines several points in a long sentence, making relationships between them less clear. Organise the body into focused comparisons—for example, one paragraph on membership and loan categories, and another on the decade-long trend—and use concise references to connect each detail to the overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “age of library members,” “total loans by category,” “fluctuations,” “surge,” and “categories.” These terms make the subject understandable, and “rose steadily” and “fell” attempt to describe movement. Some choices are imprecise or repetitive, however: “loans taken” is repeated and is less natural than “loans made” or “items borrowed,” while “highest percentage is of adults” is awkward. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “noticebale” and “little chalfont.” Aim for precise chart language such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “loan total,” and check spelling and proper nouns carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a trend sentence with “where it fell down and again saw a surge.” The main meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “It is also noticebale that…” needs a clearer construction, and “the highest loans were taken” has an awkward passive structure. The sentence beginning “In the year 2007” also has an unclear subject and uses “where” imprecisely to refer to years. There are missing spaces after full stops, and the overview sentence runs several ideas together. Use direct subjects and verbs—“loan totals rose” or “fiction represented…”—and separate the overview into shorter, accurately punctuated sentences.
