Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different ages of Little Chalfont library members. and The data in the table displays the total loans by category in 2016. The bar chart compare the total number of loans taken between 2007 and 2016.
Overall, the adults of age between 18 to 64 holds the greatest portion of library membership followed by childrens and others. Adult fictions and children's fiction contribute to the most of the loans in 2016. The total number of loans reached to its peak in the last year of total time frame.
If we look closely to the pie chart, the majority of membership belongs to adult members of library with 51% followed by childrens, young adults and adults 65 and above with a percentage of 22, 15 and 12 respectively. The children's fiction and adults fiction took the highest percentage of loan in 2016 which was 38% each, followed by adult non-fiction with 13%, childre's DVDs, young adults, adults audio books etc, counts for the remaining percent.
According to the bar chart, the greatest amount of loan were taken in 2011, 2015 and it reached to its peak in 2016 with just above 20,000. In 2007, the least number of loans were taken which was just above 15,000. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover all three visuals and provide a clear overview: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction dominates loans, and total loans are highest in 2016. Most figures are accurately reported, including the membership shares and the two 38% fiction categories. The trend description also identifies 2007 as the low point and 2016 as the peak. However, saying loans “reached to its peak” in 2016 is followed by an inaccurate claim that the greatest amounts were in 2011 and 2015; these were high points but below 2016. The final statement that loans show a “dramatic increase” over the period overgeneralises a series that fluctuates after its initial rise. More precise comparisons of the intermediate years would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the membership/loan-category data and the time series. This gives the reader a clear progression, and phrases such as “Overall,” “If we look closely,” and “According to the bar chart” help signal shifts in focus. The main weakness is that some linking and reference choices are awkward or imprecise: “followed by childrens and others” does not clearly identify the groups, while “the rest of years” is vague. The opening also joins two sentences with an unnecessary full stop before “and.” Aim for more direct transitions and make comparisons within each paragraph explicit, rather than relying on repeated chart-introduction phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “membership,” “contribute,” “fluctuated,” and “reached its peak,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision. “The greatest portion” and “holds the greatest portion” are less natural than describing the largest share, while “total time frame” and “dramatic increase” are imprecise for this data. Spelling and word-form errors such as “childrens,” “childre's,” and “fictions” also detract from control. Use standard category labels consistently, and choose verbs that describe the figures precisely—for example, “accounted for” when reporting percentages and “rose overall” for the long-term trend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and several are understandable, such as “The children's fiction and adults fiction took the highest percentage of loan in 2016.” However, some errors in agreement, sentence construction and prepositions recur. For example, “The bar chart compare” needs a singular verb, and “the adults … holds” has a subject–verb mismatch. The opening fragment-like construction, “The pie chart illustrates … members. and The data…,” also needs to be joined or punctuated correctly. Other patterns include “between 18 to 64” and “reached to its peak.” These errors do not prevent the reader from following the report, but more reliable control of verb forms and sentence boundaries is needed. Proofread each sentence for its subject, verb and preposition.
