Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the three visual formats and makes one relevant observation about adult fiction accounting for 38% of loans. However, it does not provide a usable overview of the main patterns: the age chart, the loan totals over time, and most category shares are not reported. The statement that the histogram “represents the year” does not explain the trend, which rises overall from about 15,700 in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016, with some fluctuations. The response also ends mid-sentence at “the remaining shares are distributed,” leaving the comparison incomplete. The required minimum of 150 words is not met, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, complete the report and select key figures and comparisons from all three visuals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: it begins by naming the visuals, then gives an overall statement, followed by a detail about 2016 loans. Linking words such as “Overall,” “while,” and “whereas” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the overview mostly describes what each chart shows rather than summarising its findings, and the final sentence is unfinished. The contrast markers are also used in fragments, so the relationships between points are unclear. Use separate, complete paragraphs for an overview and key details, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast the two 38% fiction categories before describing the smaller shares.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “distribution,” “percentage,” “share,” and “adult fiction,” which helps identify the subject matter. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “loan taken by each group” and “represents the year.” “Histogram” is also less suitable than “bar chart” or “line graph” for describing the relevant visual, and “half of share” does not clearly express the intended comparison. Spelling errors such as “HISTROGRAM” and “PIE CHART” in the opening reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of chart-reporting terms, including “accounted for,” “proportion,” “fluctuated,” and “rose overall,” and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to use more than simple statements, particularly in “While the table shows…” and “Whereas histogram represents…”. However, these dependent clauses are presented as sentence fragments rather than being joined to a main clause. There are also errors in articles and number, as in “about public library” and “the three charts … illustrates,” where the plural subject requires a plural verb. The phrase “members of age between 18 to 64” shows problems with the grammatical pattern for expressing an age range. Sentence structures are therefore limited, and errors sometimes make the intended relationships hard to follow. Practise writing complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and patterns such as “members aged 18 to 64.”
