Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pie chart illustrates the members of Little Chalfont Library belonging from different ages. About 22% of its members are children, 15% young adults between ages og 13 and 17, 51% adults lying between range of 18 to 64 and 12% adults over the age of 65. A table on its side shows total loan by percentage in year 2016 divided among various caretgories. The highest loan percentage is of children's fiction and adult fiction i.e. 38%. About 13% loan is from adult non-fiction category and 2% from adult audio books. From children's non-fiction and DVDs loan proportion is about 7% in total. Whereas from young adults category the loan percentage is about 2 percent. Below that a bar chart is presented showing a time span from year 2007 to 2016 with total number of loans taken from library. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You cover all three visuals and report several key figures accurately, including the 22% of members who are children, the 51% aged 18–64, and the two largest loan categories at 38% each. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary of the main patterns, so the reader must infer them. Some details are inaccurate: children’s non-fiction and DVDs together account for 7%, but this is presented unclearly as “about 7% in total”; more importantly, loans rose from about 15,700 in 2007 to 21,700 in 2016, not simply from 15,000 to 20,000. The account of the later trend also understates the figures and says loans fell to 18,000, whereas they remained around 19,600–20,700. Select the main trends and report them precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows the order of the visuals—membership chart, loan table, then yearly totals—which gives it a basic organisational framework. However, it reads largely as a sequence of descriptions rather than a clearly developed summary, and there is no distinct overview to guide the reader through the main comparisons. Linking expressions such as “Whereas” and “After the year 2013” are used, but some connections are awkward or unclear; for example, “From children’s non-fiction and DVDs loan proportion is about 7% in total” does not clearly connect the two figures. The final trend description is also difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and supporting details, and make comparisons explicit with clear references to the relevant categories and years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the chart content, including “members,” “percentage,” “category,” and “increased.” There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “illustrates” and “proportion.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “members … belonging from different ages,” “total loan by percentage,” and “loan was at 15000” do not sound idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “caretgories” and “agian” are noticeable, and “rised” is an incorrect form. These issues do not prevent the general meaning from being understood, but they limit precision and fluency. Prefer standard chart-reporting phrases such as “members by age group,” “share of loans,” and “the number of loans stood at.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the basic information using both simple sentences and some attempts at longer structures, for example, “Over the years there had been a rise … till year 2011.” However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. The phrase “adults lying between range of 18 to 64” lacks a grammatical article and has an awkward construction, while “in 2012 and 2013 their number decrease” has a tense error. The final sentence, “After the year 2013 loan number agian rised from 18 to 20000,” is difficult to parse and does not clearly express the figures. Articles, plurals, and punctuation also need more consistent control. Build clearer sentences around one comparison at a time, and check that subjects and verbs agree and that past-tense forms are correct.
