IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table graph illustrates the usage of Little Chalfont library according to different age groups and the percentage of their choice towards library services.

Overall, according to the pie chart the library is used by the majority of adult population and only little proportions were comprised of children, whereas coulumn graph shows the large proportions of loans had on children's fiction and adult fiction. However, the table graph shows increasing or decreasing trend.

From the pie chart, a large number of library users were aged between 18-64 which was 51%. This is followed by children by 22%, 15% for young adults who were 13-17 and 12% were adults who had age of 65 and over.

In contrast, the column graph shows that almost two-fifth of loans were due on children's fiction and adult fiction, whereas 13% on adult non-fiction. And insignificant proportions for children's DVDs, young adults, adult audio books, and children's non-fiction which were 1%, 2%, 2%, and 6%, respectively.

The table graph compares the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016. At the begining in 2007, which was around 15,000 and in [redacted phone], it as more than 20,000 and until 2016 it recovered again to 20,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three visuals and identify several important features accurately: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group at 51%, while children’s and adult fiction each account for 38% of loans. The category percentages are also reported correctly. This gives the response a clear, relevant overview. However, the description of the loan trend is incomplete and partly inaccurate: loans rose from about 15,700 in 2007 to around 21,000 in 2011, then fluctuated and reached a high of roughly 21,700 in 2016. Saying they “recovered again to 20,000” misses the overall rise and the final figure. The overview also calls the trend increasing or decreasing without explaining its pattern. More precise reporting of this chart would strengthen an otherwise solid response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs on membership, loan categories and the time series. This makes the different visuals easy to locate, and transitions such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “the table graph shows increasing or decreasing trend” does not clearly identify the trend, and “The table graph compares…” refers to the line chart rather than a table. The final paragraph also moves from 2007 to 2011–2012 and then 2016 without clearly connecting the stages. Use more precise references and link the key changes in chronological order to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “majority,” “proportions,” “percentage,” and “two-fifth,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “percentage of their choice towards library services,” “loans had on,” and “recovered again” do not express the intended meanings naturally. The repeated phrase “table graph” also shows limited control of chart terminology; distinguish the pie chart, table and line graph accurately. There are spelling errors such as “coulumn” and “begining,” and “little proportions” is not a natural expression. Aim for precise phrases such as “share of loans,” “accounted for,” and “the total number of loans fluctuated.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main comparisons are usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence structure, agreement and verb forms. For example, “The pie chart and table graph illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “At the begining in 2007, which was around 15,000” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. In “it as more than 20,000,” the verb is missing, and “until 2016 it recovered” does not clearly express the intended sequence. Articles and prepositions are also sometimes awkward, as in “the majority of adult population.” Build complete sentences around each figure and check subject–verb agreement and tense consistency; this will make the information more accurate without sacrificing sentence variety.
