Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, the total number of loans in library were relatively low at the start of period before climbing. The loans kept fluctuating before peaking at the end. Most library members included adults. Children, young adults and senior citizens were almost same in number. At the end of time the loans were highest in children and adult fiction while the lowest in children's dvd.

Initially in 2007, the number of loans were the lowest and were approximately 16,000, which increased to 18,000 in 2008. They kept fluctuating around 20,000 in 2010, 2011 and 2012 then decreased in 2013 to 19,000 before gradually increasing and peaking in 2016 with a figure of almost 23,000.

Moreover, adults of age 16-64 visited the library most with about 51 total attendence. Children were about 22, young adults of age13-17 were 15 and adults over 65 were merely 12. Furthermore, total loans were the highest in children and adult fiction, about 38% . Others were comparitively low with 6% in children's non fiction, 21% in young adults and adult audio books, 13% in adult non fiction and 1% in children's dvd.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover all three visuals and provide an overview, noting that adults form the largest membership group and that fiction accounts for the largest loan shares. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear: the membership figures are percentages, not attendance totals, and the largest group is adults aged 18–64, not 16–64. The overview also says children, young adults and senior citizens were “almost same,” although their shares are 22%, 15% and 12%. Most importantly, “21% in young adults and adult audio books” misreports two separate 2% categories. The loans trend is broadly captured, but the 2008–09 values are about 19,000, not 18,000. More precise comparisons would make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing the loan trend, and a final paragraph covering membership and loan categories. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Initially” and “Moreover” help signal shifts. However, the final paragraph combines two different visuals, and the sequence of details there is less controlled; the category figures would be clearer if presented separately and accurately. Some linking phrases, including “Furthermore,” add little because the relationship between the points is already clear. The overview also moves quickly between trends and categories. Grouping related comparisons more consistently and using references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is clear would strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “fluctuating,” “gradually increasing,” “peaking,” and “comparatively low.” These choices help communicate the main trend, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “loans in library” and “total attendance” do not accurately describe the data, while “the loans were highest in children and adult fiction” is awkward. There are also spelling or form errors, such as “attendence,” “comparitively,” and “dvd.” Aim for standard chart language—such as “loan figures,” “membership share,” and “accounted for”—and check spelling and category labels carefully. This would make your descriptions more precise without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast in “before gradually increasing and peaking in 2016,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction are present. For example, “the total number of loans in library were” should use a singular verb and an article, while “the number of loans were the lowest” repeats the agreement problem. “At the end of time” is also an awkward grammatical construction, and “adults of age 16-64 visited the library most with about 51 total attendance” is difficult to parse. Use singular agreement with “number,” and frame figures as proportions—for example, “Adults aged 18–64 made up 51% of members.” More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy.
