Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the data of a public library named as little chalfont situated in a town.

The pie chart gives information about the age and numbers of library members in 2016, whereas, the bar chart shows the total number of loans lended over the period of 9 years (from 2007 until 2016). The loans given in 2016 were distributed on the basis of book categories.

Overall, more than half of the library members were between 18 to 64 years old, whereas the smallest proportion was of the adults over 65 years. 22% of the library members were children and 15% out of overall members were young adults (13 to 17 years of age).

The highest proportion of loans were lended in the children's fiction category totalling 38%, the same amount was lended for the adult fiction as well, However, minimal amount of loans were distributed for the other categories roughly ranging from 1 till 13%.

From the total number of loans given from 2007 till 2016, the highest number of loans were distributed in 2016 ranging just above 20000$ and the lowest amount of loan was distributed in 2007 just near 15000$, rest of the years ranged roughly between 15000 to 20000$.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three visuals and identify several important features: adults aged 18–64 form the largest membership group, fiction accounts for the largest loan shares, and total loans peak in 2016 and are lowest in 2007. The figures you give for the age groups and the two fiction categories match the data. This is a relevant overview, but some comparisons are not fully developed. In particular, the loan trend is described as mostly between 15,000 and 20,000, although most later years are above 20,000; the rise from 2007 to 2011, subsequent fluctuations, and overall increase could be reported more precisely. Also, the smallest membership group is correctly identified, but its 12% share is omitted. More precise selection and reporting would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview of membership, a paragraph on loan categories, and a final paragraph on the trend over time. This makes the three visuals easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas,” and “However” help signal comparisons. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The second paragraph repeats information about the charts after the opening sentence, while the final paragraph groups the yearly figures broadly rather than showing how the trend changes. The connector “However” also introduces a list of smaller categories rather than a clear contrast. To improve progression, keep the overview concise and organise the detailed comparisons around the main patterns in each visual.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “category,” “distributed,” and “ranging,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “the highest proportion” and “the smallest proportion.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: loans are “made” or “recorded,” rather than “lended,” and “the data of a public library” is less natural than “information about a public library.” The phrase “ranging from 1 till 13%” is also imprecise, and “amount” is less suitable than “share” for percentages. More accurate collocations and consistent use of terms such as “members,” “loans,” and “shares” would make the report more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a comparison with “whereas” and a relative clause in “the highest number of loans were distributed in 2016.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “the highest proportion of loans were” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the same amount was lended … as well, However” incorrectly joins sentences and capitalises “However” after a comma. The opening phrase “named as little chalfont” also has an awkward grammatical construction and inconsistent capitalisation. Review agreement with singular subjects, sentence boundaries, and punctuation around contrastive linkers. Greater accuracy in these areas would complement the range of structures you already attempt.
