IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided charts and table illustrate details about a public library called Little Chalfont including age of library members, total loans by category and the total number of loans over a 9 year period, from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, majority of the members of library belong to the adult age group. Children and adult's fiction account for the majority of loans while children's DVDs contribute the least. The total number of loans were the highest in 2016 and lowest in 2007 and generally have remained stable throughout the 9 year period.
Adults aged 18-64 make up 51% of the total library members followed by children which amount to 22%. On the contrary, young adults aged 13-17 and adults 65 and over contribute the least making up 12% and 15% respectively. Children and adult fiction contribute 38% each to the total loans by category while children's DVDs, young adults and adult audio books contribute 1%, 2% and 2% respectively.
The total number of loans have not spiked irrationally and have remained stable throughout the 9 year period with the least number of loans just over 15,000 in 2007 and the highest over 20,000 in 2016. Year 2011 follows closely to the peak number.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover all three visuals and provide a clear overview, identifying the adult majority among members, the equal leading shares for children’s and adult fiction, and the overall rise in loans. Most figures are accurately reported, including the 51% adult membership and the 38% shares. However, the age-group figures are misassigned: children account for 22%, young adults 15%, and adults aged 65 and over 12%, whereas you give the latter two as 12% and 15%. The trend description is broadly sound, but “remained stable” over-generalises the changes, and the 2011 figure is not the closest year to the 2016 peak; 2015 is. More precise comparisons across the loan trend would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs, with the membership and category data grouped before the time-series information. This gives the reader a logical progression through the visuals. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the contrary,” and “while” help signal relationships, and the main points are easy to follow. Some connections could be more exact: “On the contrary” suggests a contrast, but the sentence is listing smaller age groups, while “The total number of loans have not spiked irrationally” repeats the earlier claim that the figures remained stable. A more focused progression, with the trend paragraph describing the rise, fluctuations, and later peak in sequence, would make cohesion more natural and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a sufficient range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “account for,” “contribute,” “followed by,” “peak,” and “stable,” and the meaning is consistently clear. There is some flexibility in how you describe proportions and trends, rather than relying only on “show.” A few choices are imprecise or unnatural for formal data reporting: “spiked irrationally” is not an appropriate description of a chart trend, and “Year 2011 follows closely to the peak number” is awkward. “Majority” also needs a more natural construction in “majority of the members.” Aim for precise collocations such as “fluctuated slightly,” “was close to the peak,” and “the majority of members.” These refinements would make the vocabulary more controlled and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening sentence with “including” and comparisons joined by “while.” Many sentences are clear and correctly punctuated, and errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data. Some agreement and article errors remain: “Overall, majority” needs an article, “The total number of loans were” should use a singular verb, and “The total number of loans have” also requires singular agreement. The phrase “follows closely to” has an incorrect grammatical pattern, and “Children and adult’s fiction” uses an awkward possessive construction. Review subject–verb agreement with “the total number,” article use, and the structures that follow comparison verbs. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
