IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different age groups visiting the public library. Accompanying table summarizes the category of total loans taken in 2016. Whereas, the bar chart compares the total number of loans taken throughout the period from 2007 till 2016.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that more than half of the library members are adults and only few are aged over 65. Adult fiction and children's fiction used the most amount of loans while childern's DVDs took almost nothing. Highest number of loans were taken in 2016 and 2007 recorded the lowest number of loans.
Adults at the age of 18-64 were accounted for the highest proportion of library members with more than half of the total members, followed by 22% of children. Young adults (13-17) and adults over 65 represented the smallest group of library members at 15% and 12% respectively.
2016 loan was used in several categories where children's fiction and adult fiction reported to get the highest proportion (38% each). Following to adult non-fiction which gets 13% of the total amount while young adults and adult audio books carried only 4% of the loan. Children DVDs gets only 1% of the loan, whereas, children's non-fiction gets 6% from the total loan.
The bar chart shows an upward trend throughout the given period with slight fluctuations. 2007 reported to get more than 15,000 loans, this trend peacked at 2011 with approximately 21,000 loans. After a slight decrease in the number of loans, it shows a gradual increase till 2016 with around 22,000 loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You cover all three visuals and provide a clear overview: adults form the largest membership group, fiction dominates loans, and the loan total is highest at the end of the period. Most figures are accurately selected, including the equal 38% shares for adult and children’s fiction and the rise from about 15,700 loans in 2007 to roughly 21,700 in 2016. One factual slip is that the peak occurred in 2016, not 2011; 2011 was followed by a decline and later recovery. Also, “young adults and adult audio books carried only 4%” combines two separate categories of 2% each. More precise reporting of these details would strengthen an otherwise well-covered summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for membership, loan categories, and the trend over time. The reader can follow the progression, and linking expressions such as “followed by,” “whereas,” and “after” help connect comparisons and changes. However, some transitions are awkward or unnecessary: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment in the introduction, and “Following to adult non-fiction” does not form a clear link. The overview also says the highest total was in 2016, while the later trend paragraph identifies 2011 as the peak, creating a contradiction that weakens progression. Ensure each paragraph supports the same overall account and use linking phrases in grammatically complete constructions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “represented,” “slight fluctuations,” and “gradual increase.” These choices communicate the main comparisons and trends, though some wording is imprecise or repetitive. For example, “loans taken” and “loan was used” are less natural than “loans borrowed” or “loans were distributed across categories”; “gets” is also too informal for this report. There are spelling errors in “childern’s” and “peacked,” and “carried only 4% of the loan” obscures that the two categories each accounted for 2%. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent formal phrasing, especially when describing shares and totals.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, and several sentences communicate comparisons clearly, such as “Young adults (13–17) and adults over 65 represented the smallest group…”. Some grammatical errors remain, but they generally do not prevent understanding. In the introduction, “Accompanying table summarizes” needs an article (“The accompanying table”), while “Whereas” is incorrectly used to start a fragment. There are also problems with verb forms and agreement: “children’s fiction and adult fiction reported to get” and “Children DVDs gets” should be recast with appropriate subjects and verbs. The sentence beginning “2007 reported to get…” is also structurally awkward. Practise complete sentence patterns and check articles, agreement, and verb forms while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
